OK, that resulted in what appeared to be a large download but, afterwards, no difference.

No sign of anything downloading this time but when I went back to Internet Options/settings/view objects the acarsX control was installed once more.

I've tried it with ZoneAlarm turned off and through the old dial-up connection with the router completely disconnected from the system. Can't think what other security settings could possibly be preventing it from showing now. See my reply to Ben in the thread below.
