Tupolev TU-144 (USSR) on last day of 1968

Its resemblence to the Concorde was so striking, some members of the Western press referred to it as "Concordeski"

The British / French Concorde was first flown about two months later.

The second TU-144 prototype broke up during a demostration flight at the 1973 Paris air show.

The type was placed into freight service in December of 1975.

Scheduled passenger flights were not conducted until late in 1977. Anouther fatal crash resulted in the type being taken out of passenger service in June of 1978. The planes are thought to have been retired from freight service in the early 1980s.
