Hi Gang,

Finally, after many months of work, our offline reader is ready, and we're proud to announce that version 1.1 is ready for public release! The link is available at http://www.flightadventures.com/downloads/OLR_dwnld.htm . Simply follow the instructions on the page to download what you need, and you'll soon be enjoying the luxury of viewing the VPC message boards at your leisure...OFFLINE! Most of our ex-compuserve members already appreciate the value and convenience of an OLR, and anyone that hasn't *MUST* try it! Once you do, you'll be hooked forever. Beta testers, pay close attention on the download page regarding the version of the perl script and backing up your custom.dic file.

My thanks go out to everyone that worked on this project. In particular, the main programmers, Guido Ostkamp and Vic Baron. Without them, we'd still be doing things the "web way" <yuuch>. I also want to thank Tom Hayward for his time in creating the installer that makes it *SO* easy for us to install, and the beta testers that really rode this thing into the ground to help get it where it is!

In the grand scheme of things though, Ben needs a real round of applause for his foresight and resources to create this new home for many folks displaced from other venues! If it wasn't for him, the need for an offline reader wouldn't have been there at all. Finally, I want to thank everyone who has pitched in and signed up for CREW membership here at the VPC. It's a small price that reaps many benefits, and those contributions are what ultimately keeps the VPC alive without annoying advertisements!

Enjoy the FREE offline reader folks!

Not having much success downloading the 8MB file I'm afraid. So far I've had about 6 attempts which have failed, some at 90%.

Lack of bandwidth is one problem but the biggie is that the download site doesn't support resumes. Everytime I have to start over which of course stresses the site more.

That's not good. Unfortunately, there's very little I can do about it. Perhaps you should try it early in the morning your time when most of us (in the states) are still sleeping, and the traffic won't be so bad. The server on which the files are stored are on the west coast of the US.

The other "alternative" it to go to the ActiveState website and download Perl from their servers. The file size is about 3 megs larger, but you may have better luck with their server.

Thanks, Mike.

I should probably add that if you go that route (downloading directly from ActiveState) that you'll also need to download olr.pl and manually install that your c:\Perl\bin folder since only our version of Perl will automatically install that file.

I just remember that Sam posted a tutorial on using VPC OLR with a proxy setup.

To add a proxy server to the olr.ini, this may be caused by the OLR not saving your proxy settings on first setup:

1. Open folder "C:\Program Files\FlightAdventures\VPC_OLR\"
2. Open file OLR.INI with notepad
3. Add/Ammend the following line at the end of the file;

proxy=http://yourproxyhere.domain.com:1080

OR (to remove proxy)

proxy=none

4. Save changes to OLR.INI
5. Start up the VPC OLR, and do a Get/Send Pass to test the connection settings
