"ATI Radeon v nVidia"
Posted by jonahbird on 05-15-02 at 06:46z
Hi AllA friend is just getting interested in FS having seen my setup. Without my advice he has upgraded to the Radeon 8500 and is getting very poor results. His scenery has large white areas. I've suggested getting the latest drivers but wonder if FS2002 just doesn't like this card.
Does anyone have experience of the Radeon8500?
I have the latest Nvidia Ti4600 and it goes like greased lightening with excellent smooth graphics. It is working with a P4 2.2Ghz and 1024MB of RAM.

I don't know of any compatibility problems with FS2K2 and the 8500, but aside from the usual DirectX and driver updates (ATI drivers are usually buggy), there are some known problems with VIA chipset motherboards and some graphics cards.
Perhaps if you give us some more information about your friend's system we may be able to help narrow it down more.

Hi BenThanks for your reply. My friend's PC is fairly new and is a P4 1.8Ghz.
However, after writing to the forum I searched thru my old files and found a download from Flight Sim Veterans Club (which BTW I cannot find any more). It was called "FS tips" and contains an item headed "Curing problems with ATI video cards". The following is an extract which enabled me to solve the problem completely:
>>There's another way to fix it and keep full settings in FS2002, someone told me on the AVSim Forum, anyhow you need a utility called PowerStrip, under Performance Profiles then configure, uncheck Disable Support for Driver Options in the list check the box Disable hierarchal Z-Optimization (Direct3d).<<
Best regards
