"RE: Secondary Monitor"
Posted by andor on 03-27-02 at 00:09z
Have just installed a second Monitor 15" Ipex, Video card SiVIRGE-DX/GX PCI 375/385.
In FS2K2 Display--> Hardware. Only the Primary Display Driver (NVIDIA GE Force 2 MX/MX400) is listed with hardware acceleration Active.
In DirectX Diagnostic (DirectX8.1)
Display One shows NVIDIA GE Force 2 MX/MX400
Display Two Shows SiVIRGE DX/GX PCI 375/385
If I disable 3D in Display Two it disables ALL Display Devices.
The second monitor displays GPS, Radio Stacks etc. just fine, but a great loss in Frame Rates.
Any advice on how to isolate and "reduce" monitor Two to 2D, would be very welcome.
TIA.. Regards
Andyc.

Andy,

You shouldn't switch a monitor to 2D or attempt to open a second FS window on that other display otherwise the frame rates will plummett. Windows cannot display a 3D image on any more than a single monitor whatever the system spec.

I've been using dual displays for about 4 years now and use the second display purely for 2D displays such as FSNav or an undocked panel or part panel such as a radio stack. This has no appreciable impact on frame rates.

If you're experiencing a big reduction in frame rates when you undock and drag panels to the second display you may have problems with DirectX. Go to Start / Run and type dxdiag and hit OK. Run through the tests ensuring 3D acceleration is enabled. Direct X8.1 is the latest version if you don't already have it.

Many Thx Ray, you have re-assured me, I am running DirectX 8.1 so that appears OK. Using the 2nd Monitor for Radio Stack and GPS has minimal effect on FR,s undocking ie. ( Spot Plane ) has a marked effect.
However the main purpose of the 2nd Monitor will be for FSNav (when I get it) so hopefully all should be OK.
Thx again,
Andy

Hi Andy,

Nice to come in useful now and then :-) FSNav has an undocked mode so making it very easy to move to the other display. It's about the best use you can make of a second display.

Happy flying!
