"Downloading"

Hi All
I have just encountered a problem which I have never seen before. My last 6 attempts to download from reliable sites such as FlightSim and Avsim have left me with an incomplete file.

I get a zip file which will not open as it is incomplete. Does anyone know what could be causing this? A few days before this started to happen I set up Compuserve2000 for a trial period, overlapping my old (and reliable) classic version. Could this have anything to do with it?

Many thanks for any help you can give.

Sometimes Downloads stop, or get terminated before they're actually complete, the best way to get round it, is to empty your Internet Explorer Cache, History etc, then try downloading the file again.

I doubt very much that this would be the source of your problem, they're 2 independant dial-up connections, and probably on different numbers, you could try uninstalling the the older CompuServe software.

I've just had another idea, you could try using a download agent such as Go!Zila or FlashGet, although be warned this software has a tendency to take over Internet Explorer, and Netscrape, also it contains Ad-Ware. Please keep us updated with the problem!

Hi Sam

My son-in-law suggested >>a download agent such as Go!Zila<< and the irony was that I couldn't download that either. So he downloaded it from zdnet.com and emailed it to me.

You're right about adware, spyware and all that irritating stuff. But, my problem was that I couldn't figure out how to use it (GoZilla that is) so I've taken it off and run Ad-aware to clean my drive up again.

I've been practising on ACARS and in chatting with Ben he has said the DUN.dll may be the problem. I do have quite a list of TCPs in there and seem to recall reading somewhere that there should only be one. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your continuing interest. I know this is not a very sexy subject for a flightsim forum, but downloading is rather fundamental to the enjoyment of our hobby. I must see how Ray Proudfoot is getting on with broadband, as that may be my salvation.(If you're reading this, Ray, what's the verdict to date?)

Best regards
Frank

I haven't had much experience with the DUN.dll (and it doesnt appear on my system even after a full search it may only be included on Win95/98/Me), so I cannot offer any advice on that. Although you say you have lots of TCP/IP's I'm guessing by this the one in the Networking Settings in Windows control panel, if this is so try removing all of them and then adding one TCP/IP protocol.

No problem,if you can't download properly, its a major hinderance, the sooner we sort it out the better! As for broadband, from my own experience its very reliable, I have a 24/7 600Mb/Sec connection, although sites such as FlightSim do throttle you to 30k/Sec (unless you pay for their FirstClass Membership). Coming back home to 56k is a big shock for me!

Ack! Did I say DUN.dll? I meant to say/write winsock.dll.

Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, that's where I'm seeing them. I'll give it a go.

Just read a message from Compuserve. AOL is about to strike the final blow. They are offering a trial period of fixed rate AOL, with promises of a better future under that banner. Shame, I was quite fond of Cs.

Hi Sam

As you may see from my reply to Jim Hamilton, removal of the old version of Compuserve and OzWin seems to have done the trick. I've just had my first successful download for many days.

Thank you for suggesting this as a possible solution. It is easy to blame Compuserve but I wonder if the intruder was OzWin.

Best regards
Frank

Shame about that Frank considering the news item I read today that AOL were shutting down Compuserve2000 but keeping the classic version open.......for how long?????

On the TCP/IP front, if if only have a dail-up connection then in Network settings you should only have one TCP/IP protocol bound (linked) to the dial-up adaptor. Sometimes you get 2 or 3 dail-up adaptors showing as installations went wrong, if that is the case then delete all the copies and the associated TCP/IP protocols.

Yes I do have more than one. You are confirming something I recall reading somewhere. I will tidy up as you suggest.

Hi Frank,

I must see how Ray Proudfoot is getting on with broadband, as that may be my salvation.(If you're reading this, Ray, what's the verdict to date?)

I found the message eventually <g>. Broadband is great and I'm able to download files previously out of bounds. Of course after a while using the faster speeds one does get used to it and it becomes the norm. What I really need to do is to visit a friend using a 56K connection and then I might appreciate what I'm already taking for granted.

Oh, and the price reduction to £30 / month is very welcome. Never been a better time to sign up if you're lucky enough to live in range of a digital exchange.

Sounds like the way to go. Even a 56K modem doesn't download that fast.

AOL's latest announcement includes the intention to provide a broadband service, so the price prospects must be good. Or is that too naive a conclusion?

I suppose that depends on whether you like AOL or not :-), personally I can't stand their system or s/ware.

There are plenty of other broadband providers Frank which just provide access without content so they may be cheaper than AOL.

Hi Frank,

Continued apologies for my absence. I needed to reinstall Windows this weekend after corrupting my Registry :-(

before signing up with any ISP for broadband check the connection speed. BT's is 500Kb, NTL's is half that but does cost less of you have signed up with them for TV services. I have no idea of AOL's offer. The BT offer includes a decent ADSL modem (external USB) which has worked flawlessly.

Prices are falling but given that you will probably have to sign up to a minimum 12 month contract check things carefully. I'm sure you would anyway.

Hi Ray

Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear you have had troubles.
Hope the reinstall went OK.

My downloading problem still exists. Thought it was cured a few days ago but the addage about one swallow not making a summer proved true. Visiting my son-in-law tomorrow. He's very clued up so we might get somewhere. At the very least he said he would download some files for me.

I'm about ready to add another computer and screen to my setup. That may help me solve the mystery of the downloading failures.

Best regards
Frank

Hi Frank,

Have you fixed your problem?

I'm not very strong on the technicalities, but I have had a few incomplete downloads from Flightsim.com. If I log on to flightsim.com, begin a download, have it interrupted, and logon anew, some sort of changed setting prevents the download resuming.

I've been able to resume successfully when, with IE still showing Flightsim and not logged out of or into the site, I've pressed resume in the download programme.

I use GetRight for downloading, and find it really reliable.

Hi Jim

This evening brought success. Following a suggestion by Sam Harvey I removed the old Compuserve program and the now useless OzWin. This seems to have done the trick.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'll keep that GetRight in mind. Didn't like the intrusion of GoZilla, and couldn't figure out how to use it anyway :-(

Frank
