Came across an article at The Register www.theregister.co.uk, that Compuserve UK could soon be no more.
Of course AOL would neither confirm nor deny the rumour.

Perhaps flightadventures had better standby for an influx of new members <G>

The news wouldn't surprise me at all. In fact, I it wouldn't surprise me one bit if AOL killed Compuserve completely shortly afterward. What's been happening over there is pretty typical business practice in recent years. The once mighty brand not being supported any longer should be a good indicator to what AOL has in mind.

Well, they're more than welcome here. Please spread the word to anyone interested.

You're right Ben, but AOL isn't really that stoopid. They plan to turn the Compuserve name into a simple ISP with no content. That's evident with the closure of FSFORUM the GAMERS along with many others. The forums initially targeted for closure were those of "contract holders," that is, those who were being *paid* to maintain and run forums in Compuserve. I believe that the only forums that are left are the ones that told CIS that they'd volunteer their services to continue the forum. They'll be shutting those down in short order is my bet. It's a shame, 'cause Compuserve was one of the first, and most definitely the BEST (in my eyes). AOL won't abandon that name recognition, and will continue to cater to those that "hate AOL," by providing an alternate means to the internet. I'm sure you know that there are many seemingly computer saavy folks that won't see that they are actually paying Steve Case when they say that their ISP is Compuserve ;-)

They started with outsourcing their US customer service from CServe HQ to regional companies about 6 years, Tech Support was handled out of Oklahoma I think. Rumour has it now that AOL has sent it even further away, offshore to one of those countries that speaks English, but where 2 dollars a day is a king's ransom in wages...
