"North Magnetic Pole could be leaving Canada"
Posted by Ben Chiu on 03-20-02 at 19:47z
Dave Dawson sent me this from CNN.com:"The North Magnetic Pole could soon abandon Canada, migrate north of Alaska and eventually wind up in Russia, according to a Canadian scientist.
The magnetic pole, which has steadily drifted for decades, has picked up its pace in recent years and could exit Canadian territory as soon as 2004, said Larry Newitt of the Geological Survey of Canada..."

Wonder how this is going to affect aviation navigation charts.

Greeneth one,

ROFL!
Leave it to you to bring 'color' into this equation of science.
From what I saw of the Russians, when I flew over their airspace in the middle 90's.....after they had just opened that space up to the world airlines.....was that ANYTHING was possible...for a few rubles.
NWA trained the first 6 ATC controllers, for the most Northern Pacific Routes that took you into Russian airspace, at our MSP base. Most important was to teach a bit of "pilot English" to them. U.S. pilots do not often follow ICAO "suggested" English and or 'phrases' related to normal pilot reports.
As an example.......one of our most revered Chief Pilot's....on a day when he encountered severe headwinds.....was known to utter.........."Geesh...I have been sucking hind "mammary gland" all day at this altitude."
Knowing that the Russian ATC boys would NOT know just what this meant.....required a bit of extra special "study" at the most local Hooters in MSP.
I happened to make that gathering. Grin.

Cap'n Tarmack

I wonder how it's going to affect the magnetice deviation
memory aid?Maybe "West is least and East is best" or a more modern
version, "East is least and West is best...NOT"

Greetings Alan:> I wonder how it's going to affect the magnetice deviation

I realize that you're joking here, but just for the sake of accuracy, the turning error classification you're referring to is known as "magnetic dip errors."

LOL! If the magnetic pole keeps moving at the rate it's going, I think the mnemonic will eventually become "Use GPS!"

>>Wonder how this is going to affect aviation navigation charts.<<no having to end every search question with, "eh?", and no requirement to keep back bacon in the FBOs?
