"Flight Rooms"

Is it possible to have a step by step instruction posted on how to set up a flight in the Flight Room, how to go about it, what info. required ie. Host (self) ISP, airport ID etc. and having set it up , what next, allowed to take off or have to await other (if any) pilots.
Very interested in setting up an occasional flight.
TIA.
Regards Andyc.

Greetings Andy:

I'll post something soon, but keep in mind that it'll only be valid for a couple of weeks as we're working on a whole new version that'll be more intuitive and fully integrated into the VPC system. We're just trying to finish up the OLR before we get back into FlightRoom development.

Thanks for your patience!

Ben

"RE: Flight Rooms FAQ"
Posted by Ben Chiu on 03-13-02 at 23:27z
Greetings Andy:

Here's the latest from the VPC FAQ http://www.flightadventures.com/vpc/faq/faq_vpc.htm#1h regarding the current incarnation of the Flight Rooms (again, a new version will be online as soon as we're finished with the OffLine Reader).

============================

Q: What are Flight Rooms?

A: VPC Flight Rooms are where you and other simulator pilots can fly together online. (Of course, each pilot must have the same version of the same flight simulator installed on their systems first.) Some of the things you can do while flying online with other simulator pilots include many of the same things you can do in the real world such as virtual fly-ins, search and rescue operations, cross-country flights, interact with ATC, or even fly with an instructor!

Q: Do I have to agree to the Disclaimer and Terms of Use in order to enter or use the Flight Rooms?

A: Yes. By entering or using any of the VPC Flight Rooms, you agree to accept the Disclaimer and Terms of Use of the VPC and Flight Rooms.

Q: What is the VPC Flight Lobby and how is that different from the Flight Rooms client, Fly_Now!?

A: The VPC Flight Lobby is a web-based application (e.g. you only need to use your web browser) that allows VPC Members to interact with people chatting on the VPC Flight Server, without downloading and logging on to the Fly_Now! client. We've added this feature so VPC members can quickly check to see who's currently flying online and chat with them.

Q: How do I register my name so that the VPC Flight Lobby will recognize it?

A: The current version of the Flight Rooms are not tied to the main VPC database yet. So until you register your name on the VPC Flight Server, you will only be able to access the Lobby using the 'Guest' nickname (no password is necessary). To register a unique nickname/callsign, you must log on the VPC Flight Server using the FlightAdventures Fly_Now! client, which you will be prompted to download from the Flight Rooms area of the VPC when you host or join a flight and click the Fly Now! button.

Q: How do I create a Flight or join an existing Flight?

A: The following assumes that you've already created a VPC Flight Server account. If you haven't done this already, please see How do I register my name so that the VPC Flight Lobby will recognize it?.
    To create a Flight:
    • Enter the Flight Rooms
    • Select an empty Flight.
    • Connect to the VPC Flight Server clicking the Fly Now! button. (You will receive an ActiveX warning alert. This is normal. Click "Yes" to continue.)
    • Login to the VPC Flight Server.
    • Click on the Create Game button from the menu on the left side of Fly Now!.
    • Select the Game you with to create from the drop down menu.
    • Enter a unique Gamename in the appropriate box (this is required)
    • Click the Create! button to create the game.

    To Join an existing Flight:
    • Make sure no games are running on your system before connecting to the VPC Flight Server using Fly_Now!
    • Login to the VPC Flight Server.
    • Click on the Join Game button from the menu on the left side of Fly Now!.
    • Select the Game you wish to join from the list, then click the Join! button.
    • Once you've joined the game, wait for the Controller/Host to launch the game. Please be patient. Your game will launch automatically when the Controller/Host starts the session.

Q: What are some of the Flight Lobby commands?

A: The commands available to the VPC Flight Lobby can be found here.

Q: What do the icons mean?

A: All of the member icons displayed on the VPC Flight Lobby and the Fly_Now! client are the same as the message board icons with the exception of the green radar screen (yes, it only looks like a green dot!), which designates the Controller for the room.

Q: How do I change the Flight Information and ATIS for a flight?

A: The first pilot to enter a flight will be presented with tools that will allow them to set the Flight Information and ATIS for the flight listing. Typically the Host will enter where the flight will originate and if applicable, where the flight will end. If there is an destination, the ATIS for the destination airport would be entered. Other useful information to add to the Flight Information box is the host's IP address (use winipcfg.exe) so others may join the flight after it has begun. The next version of FlyNow! allows pilots to join existing flights without passing IP addresses like this.

Q: How do I become a host?

A: The first pilot to enter a Flight will become the Flight's Host. All pilots that join after a Host as been established can only join the Pilot Roster.

Q: I entered a Flight and was asked to login, which I did, but nothing happened. Why?

A: This is bug in the Flight Rooms (the FlightRooms are still under construction). What's happened is you've been asked to login to the main VPC database. Unfortunately, the Flight Rooms are not tied to that database, so you need to click the Flight button again in order to login to the Flight. Our apologies for the inconvenience, but it's a known problem that will go away once we tied the databases together.

Again many thanks Ben, I fully appreciate the work that must go on behind the scenes in VPC. (Only wish I were knowledgable enough to lend a hand, as time is one of the things I have abundance of). I DID read the FAQ,s but at the time the subject did not penetrate. Look forward to the new version, in meantime will fumble along in my usual fashion. :)
Regards
Andy.

No problem, Andy. The FAQ was out of date anyway. :(

One of the many issues of working with a "live" system like the VPC is we update stuff, but don't have the bodies available to make all of the other relevant updates that go along with them (the domino effect).

Anyway, no worries about not being able to contribute technical expertise. Your support from your VPC Membership, contributions to the messageboard, chat attendance, and flight attendance is really the best contribution we would ask of anyone. If this site is going to work, we need many more like yourself--folks that use the facilities and contribute to it's upkeep.

Best!

Ben
