"FS2002 generating an "illegal operation" & freezing the PC"
Posted by Emile on 02-07-02 at 07:51z
Hello, I need some help. For several days I cannot run FS2K2, each time I try: FS starts, generates the first screen (with the 747), is doing disk accesses and freezes, I wait several minutes then again some more disk access and finally I get a popup box with " This program has performed an illegal operation and will shut down. If the problem persists contact the program vendor"
I have no mouse anymore, "Ctrl/Alt/Del" does not work.
I request the Details (shift D) :
"DDhelp caused a general protection fault in module GDI.exe at 0001:00001BA7
Registers
EAX 77e cs 44f EIP 1ba7 Eflg 246
EBX 21 SS 2677 ESP 8668 EBP 8680
EXC 1 DS 5bf ESI 0 FS 5bf
EXD 0 ES 5ef EDI 52 GS 0
Bytes at 5f0466 cl e0 10 66 0f ac d0 10 66 59 66 0b"
As I have no mouse and no reaction from the keyboard I cannot access the rest of the information.
I can only power off/on.I tryed to report this to µsoft via the link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com/support/webresponse.asp
but there is no Product ID (PID) Locator for FS2002 Pro English
Now the BIG question : do you have any idea why these problems? What should I do?
If you are interrested I can send the Dxdiag listing I did run on the PC this gives all the details of the configuration
Emile
Deep in the .....
Thanks in advance

Greetings Emile:Have a look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q275911
It seems the error you've got has to do with Flash and/or IE. I'd bet the odds are that your Iomega Zip update caused it. Anyway, try the solution they suggest.
Hope this helps!
Ben

Last Status : I did receive recommendation from µsoft to "clean" my PC (whith the process to follow)and reinstall FS2K2 in "safe" mode. I did it and afterwards FS2K2 was again running. I restarted in "normal mode" and FS2K2 was still running BUT after +- 4hours ....again a "ddhelp caused a general protection fault ..."I also had problems during the Dxdiag (illegal operation) .
I rebooted the PC and I am sending all the information to µsoft
I wait ....

OK it seams that the situation is improving, I can run Fs2K2 but I cannot have a "blue sky" the ground is good (with details) but my sky is always black even at noon, if I add clouds they are white on the black sky...very nice but not what I am looking for.
Any suggestions?
THanks
Emile

Hi Ben , You know what ?? it is solved... the solution is : "Alt+Enter" to toggle FS2K2 into a window and the sky is blue, the day light is back and even taxi path is available .... this was a solution proposed by µsoft
I did went back to the Full screen & all OKI am so happy...
the question I raised to µ soft : why (for what reason did I have the problem) and how to avoid the repetition?
See you
Emile

Emile - I *must* congratulate you on your patience
. It looks like you had/have a problem with your 3D operation. Hope the fix stays for you.
Good luck,
Vic

Greetings Emile:
Sounds like you have a video driver problem. Which video card are you running? (Some of the older VooDoo based cards only worked in 3D in full screen mode.) Did you install DirectX 8.0a? Are you video drivers Direct8 compliant?

Greetings Emile:Have you tried running FS in a different video resolution or color depth to see if you still have the problem?
Also, sometimes the latest video drivers are actually worse than an older more stable version. I know this was true some nVidia drivers in the past. That's something else you might explort.
In any case, you're really running a system that's just slightly above the min specs set by MS. I'm surprised that you can even fly FS2K2 at all with it. You're a far better pilot than I since you obviously can.
Best!
Ben

Hi Ben,
After testing and retesting ,following the instructions of µsoft support, without any acceptable results. I decided to increase the resolution of the PC and FS2K2 from 1024x768 to 1152x ? (i did forget) AND you know what !!! all the problems are gone !!!!no crashes, no black sky, day light is back and taxi path is again available, no more need to "Alt+Enter" to toggle in the window ...I did inform µsoft support and I am waiting their answer.
I have to tell that the collaboration with the team of µsoft support is good, they participate, they try to help and I did appreciate their implication
Bravo µsoft
Yes, my machine is at the low end of the performances and I plan to upgrade.
thanks to you and the VPC members for your support

By the way I did try the "spell check TEST" and I do receive a white empty window with a popup box "No form found. Check Java function call(ok)"

Yes, the spell check for messages is busted. (It works fine for private messages tho.) Once our unix box is up, we should be able to get that other spell checker to work.
