"FS2K2 IFR landing "

Posted by Emile on 01-30-02 at 07:59z
Hello, I am new to FS2K2 and flight sim. I have troubles to flight IFR, I understand the theory, but I do not understand HOW to initialize for a specific airport the ADF, DME and ILS information in the radio stack.
Can someone give me an example : Airport, aircraft (cessna as I start, no 747 !!) and check list to follow to initialize and land at that airport using the ILS.
Thanks in advance and have a nice day

OhBoy! That's a big order! :)

I wrote a "Basic Instruction for Navigation" a couple of years ago that starts you out in the Cessna and guides you through a flight from Meigs to, as I remember it, Champaign-Urbana by IFR. And then another flight to somewhere to the west to give you an idea of how to find yourself using VORs if you are lost. I'd be glad to EMail it to you if you are interested....it is just words and instructions, no fancy graphics, but it will get you started and give you an idea of how the whole thing works....

Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you found it helpful and that it still works as it was written way back in the old FS5.1 days....

Yes - practice, practice, practice....and it will become second nature to you...:)

Emile, As an example of how the radios are set for an IFR approach and landing, you can use the default flight from Meigs in the Cessna. The radios are tuned to Rwy 27 (left, I think) at O'hare Intl. When the default flight loads, the ADF needle is pointing 45 degrees to the left. I would adjust the heading of VOR1 to 270 degrees but that is not absolutely necessary. Take off on Meigs Rwy 36 and climb straight ahead to 2000'. Turn on the autopilot and engage heading (ctrl-h), altitude (ctrl-z), and then approach (ctrl-a). The cessna will pick up the ILS and follow it in like a fish on a string <g>.

I won't go into detail about how to execute an Instrument Approach on your own, but Flight Simulator does a good job of getting you down in bad weather.
