"Nick Dargahi's book"

Posted by WScofield on 01-24-02 at 21:31z
I was poking around on Amazon.com, and saw a mention of Nick Dargahi's book, The Ultimate Flight Simulator Pilot's Guidebook, that was due for publication in December 2001. I haven't been able to find that it was actually released.

I know the first edition of this extensive tome was published in 1998. According to Barnes & Noble, a second edition came out later. They don't yet have the latest edition in stock, and neither does anyone else, it seems.

Has anybody heard about a newer version, perhaps one that picks up FS2K2?

William

I think Nick got this to publication readiness but his publisher dropped it at the last minute. I don't think he's found another.

Pete

I didn't know Nick was still active in the FS scene. Does he have a web site? Just the other day I was just looking at the link I had for him years ago and it's no good.

Don't know anything about a web site. I *think* the email address I've got for him is okay. He's still on the distribution list for my fs freeware. I'll send it by private email (in case he doesn't want general publicity) if you want it.

Regards,

Pete

My research gotten as far as to locate an ISBN # for the book. But I don't know exactly what that means. The bookstores say it was due in December, but hasn't come in yet. I'd sure like to see if it is coming. The first version, which I own, is awesome.

Thanks.

William

The ISBN is probably applied for and allocated quite a while before publication date as it has to be included in the stuff going to the printers.

I almost 100% sure is isn't. When nick finds another publisher, which seems doubtful at present, I'm sure he'll tell me, and Ray Proudfoot as well for that matter, as he includes some of our stuff in it.

Yes, and most all of it is still valid, so don't throw it away! <G>

Pete

More's the pity if it is not released. Borders confirmed to me that the book is not available at present. I can only hope Nick finds a publisher. How about Microsoft? (ahem) They could afford it.

Of course, I won't. One quick question, though. I became intrigued with flying the Amelia Earhart trip in the original plane, which is on the CD. It seems to want the Flight Shop converter program, however, which in turn wants FS 98, neither of which is on this machine. Do have to install FS98, and the converter program, in order to install the aircraft and make it available to FS2K2 - or is there a simple work-around. I haven't installed many add-on planes lately, so am admittedly behind the times.

Thanks.

William

Sorry, I'm not the right one to answer this, I don't really install many if any add-on planes at all. But I think I read somewhere that someone had released a package which handles this. It's mainly the gauges that it needs i think. you could mess about and adapt another panel for it of course. Or you could fly the adventure in a different aircraft.

Pete

Greetings William:

>How about Microsoft?

That might be pretty tough. It's been a couple of years since I left Microsoft Press, but I have it on good authority (pardon the pun) that MSPress has shut down their game book division. You may have noticed that MSPress has not published an FS2K2 book or any other game book for that matter for their last few releases.

Actually, I did notice that. That's part of the reason I was excited when I came across the reference to a new version of Nick's book. It would be an awesome contribution to the FS community to have a book like that updated for today's programs, computers and graphics cards.

Not that I have finished reading the first version from cover to cover, mind you.
