"CH USB controls and Windows XP"
Posted by PaulCroft on 01-13-02 at 23:19z
Hi y'allWell, I've taken the plunge and just ordered a new PC - AMD 1900+ with 512MB DDR RAM, nVidia GEForce3 Ti500 graphics card and 18.1" TFT screen (for those in the UK it's the PC Pro 'A'-list PC from Evesham)
What I need to know is: Will my CH USB yoke and pedals work OK with the Windows XP Home OS it's specc'd to come with? If not then I guess I'll install 98SE but it seems rather a retrograde step.

CH has released some new drivers for XP. You can find them on their website.

Well, since I have Windows 98 I had no reason to download the new Control Manager. I was only reading online how people were having troubles with XP and the CH USB yoke. Then they all announced the release of their new drivers on the CH website had corrected all their problems.
Looking at the readme file for Control Manager, it appears that there are some drivers that get installed along with Control Manager. I believe this is what you are looking for.

Hi Paul,I'm green with envy especially with that monitor! I'm also looking at acquiring a new system based on the Athlon 1.9XP but as for a TFT screen? Well, that may have to wait. I obviously earn a lot less than some who shall remain nameless!
Hope you have lots of fun with it!

Hi Ray >I'm green with envy especially with that monitor!
I had no plans to buy it until I saw it in Evesham's showroom. The picture quality is stunning. Even so, I was still dithering until my wife gave her unqualified approval.

Hi Paul,Do you have the name of that TFT monitor? I'd like to assess it although if I wait too long there'll be a better one along to replace it. Glad to hear you got approval from "she who must be obeyed"
<<Who could you mean?>>
His names escapes me .... could be Paulo or something like that

Hi Ray>Do you have the name of that TFT monitor?
The monitor I saw was an LG Flatron 17". The 18" is just a bigger version. Who makes LG I hear you ask?? I've no idea!

Hi Paul,Thanks for the info. LG is a Korean firm and this particular monitor has done well in PCPro tests I think.
The 18" would be my ideal monitor for a primary display but that extra inch seems to add considerably to the cost. Oh well, I'll wait another few months and they'll be half the price! I wish!!

Hullo Paul,I'm interested to hear how you find you TFT monitor.
I was contemplating buying one such from EIZO whose 18" job has received some good reports from the press until I was put off by being advised that the smearing on moving graphics would be troublesome with Flightsim. To try one of these out on Flightsim is just not practicable for me.
I see that there is also a new TFT technology from Mitsubishi which radically speeds up the screen elememt reponse time which is said to be going into production soon.
Those two factors made me put the plastic back in my trouser pocket. But I'd still like to have one of these animals asap and not wait for the new tech.
I would therefore be most interested to know how your TFT performs with Flightsim. Is there much noticeable smearing?
BTW, I hope you got your nosewheel steering the way you want it.
Regards,
Maurice.

Hi Maurice> I'm interested to hear how you find you TFT monitor.
I'll let you know once I've got it. In the store they didn't have FS2k2 installed for me to check for smearing so instead I watched Grand Prix being run (or some such car racing game). I didn't see any evidence of smearing in that and I figured that car racing scenery was being displayed far faster than it gets displayed with fs2k2. Once I get everything installed (it's due for delivery next week) I'll report back.
> BTW, I hope you got your nosewheel steering the way you want it.
Yes I did thanks. I should have replied with a thanks for the advice given earlier and I apologise for not doing so. When I found the FS2k2 aircraft editor I was delighted - so much better than the version supplied with FS2k. That one was so bad I gave up trying to use it and used cfgedit instead.

Hello Paul,>I watched Grand Prix being run (or some such car racing game). I didn't see any evidence of smearing.......<
That's encouraging. I think I might invest in a EIZO TFT on the strength of that and also hearing that another TFT user doesn't complain about smearing on Flightsim.
I suspect that the appearance of an 18" version of the new Mitsubishi TFT may be some time in coming and will almost certainly be much more expensive than the EIZO. I think I'll warm up the plastic in readiness for tomorrow.
FSEDIT: It's been my first experience of using this in Flightsim. I find that it works with the default MS jets and also the PSS 747s. But I downloaded a wizard BA Super VC10 and excellent panel for same but FSEDIT won't work with that (I wanted to fix it's darned nosewheel<g>). But I have found that these config files are fragile and easily damaged, even when using FSEDIT. I'm glad I kept a back-up of each of them.
Thanks for your comments.
Please let me know what you think of your new display when you get it in operation.

Of course, and only a few more days to wait now, all being well. Patience is being severly tested here

If you don't want to program your buttons on the yoke, the CH USB Yoke and Pedals work GREAT with WinXP. You just plug them in and go. XP will recognize them immediately, no need to install any drivers or anything. Plug them in and then start up FS2002 and all the functions work without doing anything. Even the right and left differential-braking toe brakes work perfectly. Now... I've tried several times to get the Control Manager software to allow me to change the buttons and it has just screwed everything up terribly and I got tired of messing with it. Someday I'll go back to it and figure it out.Rick Lee www.rickleephoto.com

I'll bear that in mind when it comes to messing. Thanks for the heads up.
