"My Gripes about FS2K+2"

a) incredibly detailed, but sparse Chicago scenery. Maybe it is me, but there are too darn many gaps in the Miracle Mile, etc. even at the highest detail level. Granted, I want to take the Corsair in a mission against the blimp, and actually have a screenshot of me coming in from below on his six...

b) the stupid, "want to continue the flight or quit" message. Trying to the get the engines restarted and throttled up for a takeoff seems to get me this, and every 15 seconds is a bit annoying...

c) lack of a way of converting FS2K planes over quickly. I tried the Boeing 575 personal jet by Nick Pike. You know, with no power going to the fans, I am still able to keep doing turns without burns, and keeping the thing straight and level (actually this seems to be the problem with all of the planes) without some forward pressure on the stick lest the nose come up and eventually getting past the 70 degree point...

d) trying to fly with a HOTAS setup, and juggle the keyboard for all the things you can't map the 8 buttons and hatswitch to.

e) that the "look-back" view shows me the seat headrest rather than giving me a view of the runway getting smaller after taking off.

f) the default that requires me to hit "Alt-enter" to get the menu to show up, rather than making "on" the default...

Okay, done grumbling.

Yeah but it's better than in FS2000 right? ;-) I think that they concentrated on airports first, then worked on the autogen, then city scenery.

I haven't seen this behavior. It could have something to do with keyboard mapping.

It's usually the custon guages that mess up imports. Unfortunately, the 3rd party guys have to patch their planes. As far as the nose pitching way up, have you tried trim? I generally find that the default trim setting is way too high.

Got me there. I'm just using a MS sidewinder until I can get my yoke and pedals up and running again.

They were going for realism here. If you hit "W" first to get the "minimal" cockpit view, then you can look back and see the runway disappear.

Would not know about 2K. I use 98, and have the Andy Johnson buildings add-on. The combination of High-Density and that add-on make it pretty close to what I remember from 3 weeks ago (although someone really should put the Elevated Train lines and the Drake Hotel into the mix too.. :D)

I am just running with straight default mapping. I might have to go thru the training part rather than Fly NOW!!! like experience from earlier versions counts for something.

How do you change the trim setting?

Same thing. Trying to juggle a joystick and a keyboard seems to make a lot of this stuff way more complicated than it should be.

I guess I would, if they ever trusted me with the controls, know enough to lean to the right, and look around the seatback... The idea of looking at it rather than the ground behind me seems somewhat disingenious...

I don't know why you'd be getting that "Do you want to quit..." message unless you are accidentally hitting the ESC key or something.

I usually set my seat height up a little bit so that I can see over the dash and the seat-back. This requires using the Virtual Cockpit (which I love).

I've got a few gripes about FS2002... I keep meaning to make a list but I'm having too much fun with it I guess. I'll get around to it.

nope. landed at Midway, made the mistake of shutting the engines down. Could not get them restarted, and in the process of trying, every 15-30 seconds had the "do you want to a) end flight b) continue flight c) see flight analysis message window pop up. About like playing "Whack-A-Mole" or dealing with an inbred 5 year old from WV...

Since the engine startup and shutdown sequence is so incredibly cool in FS2002 with the great sound and beautifully animated props and smoke coming out of the cowls, etc, I have started doing that all the time now whereas in the past I never really bothered to shut down the engines. I learned really fast that if I let the plane sit there with stuff running off of the batteries, I'd soon be unable to start the engines back up. Now I'm really careful to shut down the electrical system after shutting down the engines. Now I don't have trouble restarting.
