"FS2K2 startup time"
Posted by Sancho on 11-28-01 at 19:21z
Dear friends,
Please contribute to a "mini survey".
I am running FS2K2 under WIN ME on a 1.3GHz, P4, 256KB RAM, 32MB nVidia Geoforce2.
From the time I hit power-on on the CPU until WIN ME is fully up (no disc activity) it takes 70 seconds.
From the time I double-click on the FS icon until I can apply takeoff power at standard Meigs (all sliders max except frame rate) it takes 80 (eighty!) seconds.
Is this normal? Does it really require 100 billion instructions to put that Cessna on the rwy?
Comments and comparisons appreciated. Thank you.

Hi SanchoNot being an owner of FS2K2 I do not know that exact startup time for this version but for FS2K it was around 30 - 40 seconds on my 800 Mhz AMD Athlon. I can suggest a couple of things that may improve performace;
1. Defrag your hard disk - Its amazing how slow a fragmented hard disk can go!
2.Make sure your not running any other programs in the background (Press Ctrl-Alt-Del, end everything except Systray and Explorer).
Hope that helps
Sam

Hi Sam,
Thank you for your suggestions. I did a defrag and the three finger salute prior to starting the stopwatch. You are right, they do help a lot. Happy landings.

G,day Sancho,
Looks like we have almost similar "rigs", I am running FS2K2 on Windows ME Intel Pen 4 1500mhz. 384 RAM. NVIDIA GE Force MX/MX400 63.5 Mb. Hard Disc 37.2 Gb (30.1Free). DirectX 8.1 Video Driver I run on 1024x768x16 Full Screen.
I (today) De-Fragged and Scan Disc,d etc. and just after that timed the same scenario .
Start to Windows Me (Desktop) 69 secs
Clk. FS2K2 icon to Default airport 75 secs.Frame rate varies widely from 16 to 33+.
Distant scenery appears very blurred.
All sliders set to Max. (Visib. big effect on Fr Rate)
Hope this can give you some info. Look forward to comparing notes,
Regards,
Andyc

Hi Andyc,
Thank you for your information. I am getting the impression that what we see is normal. Happy landings.

Hi GuysIt looks like FS2K2, requires a pretty beefy machine, and just like its predecessor "could" it be classed ahead of its time for what it requires to run the sim at an acceptable rate, with acceptable visuals.
I do not own FS2K2, although it would be helpful to see what anyone else thinks of the loading times (please include your system config with the post if possible).

FS2002 does a lot of scenery processing as it starts so yes, it seems to take a little longer to load. However, for me FS2002 stops at the Concorde display for a long time, then starts doing scenery.>Dear friends,
