"fs2k2 clouds and drivers"

Posted by debohde on 11-21-01 at 08:44z
You may recall a problem I'm having with my viewing of the clouds in fs2k2. Mostly they look great especially when viewed from the inside cockpit view or from the behind in the spot view. As soon as you start to look at them nearly perpendicular to the direction of flight, you can see them to be flat disks floating in space. This looks very unrealistic. Never saw this problem even in fs2k. Most don't see this phenomena, but some have. could it perhaps be a driver probmem?
I have a (Jan '01) N'Vidia GeForce 2 GTS 32MB AGP card in my 1Ghz Dell Computer. the driver being used (from Dell with the original computer)is version 4.12.01.0545. Could this be the problem. This is the only problem Ive seen in using fs2002, thus far. no lockups or stutters really. Any help to flesh out my clouds would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Donn

Just jumping in here to let you know that your message has been received and to hope that someone with FS2K2 joins in with a reply. I am gonna need to upgrade before I join the fun with the new MS release, but from all I have been reading, I can hardly wait!

Hope you can solve your clouds problem, and different drivers just may do it. It might be a case of experimenting to see what works. BTW, Kit, from over in CServe, solved his horrible "blue lines across everything" display problem by downloading and installing Direct X 8.1. This is something you might also look into....

Hi Jerry,
You will be very pleased with your upgrade. It really is pretty amazing! Funny, you should mention DX8.1. I happened to d/l it last night and was waiting to hear some good things about it before I installed it. I'll give it a try!
See ya,
Donn

Hi Donn,

I see those same type of clouds. I don't believe there is any problems, it's just the way MS made them. My guess is, in FS2K certain clouds were framerate killers. The newer clouds are much easier on the system. We'll have to wait for add-ons to improve on these types of clouds.

Hi, Randy,
You may just be right. If so, too bad as they are a bit troublesome. Thanks for your insights.

The best clouds I've seen in a flight sim (3d Model wise) has to be Flight Unlimited 3 & X-Plane, FU3 doesn't use flat discs to model their clouds, its a shame MS couldn't render them in full 3D.

Hi Donn,

Just to let you know I never seen or had this problem while running any of the beta's <s>. Have now checked this through out my network and get the same results. Bare with me while I check with the Beta Newsgroup.

Regards,

James.

Thanks, James,
I did install the DirectX 8.1 but it changed nothing noticable. The cloud 'disks' are troublesome and anything you can find out will be greatly appreciated by many more than just me.

Donn - FWIW,Haven't tried this yet myself but I read on another forum that if you remove any text display, like frame counter, the cloud situation will improve.

Hi Vic,
From my few tests late tonight, what you suggest appears to be correct. If you remove the frame rate, and other data from the screen (shift+z), the clouds get 3d. I did for the first time however, see large white 'billboards' which became clouds before my eyes. This i've not seen before (just full of 'em aren't I?!). LEt me know what you think.
Thanks,
Donn

Donn -

Glad the initial suggestion helped. My next guess would be to try different drivers for your card. Be sure to completely remove the old drivers before installing the new ones. FWIW, I tried several from Nvidia before I settled on the .1241 version. The newer ones did not work with my system.

Athlon 1.4g
Asus A7m266 mobo
GeForce2 GTS 64M
256 DDR ram
