Greetings Jeff:
I guess out Tech Support guys missed this one.
Silly question: Do you have engine sounds enabled (Options: Settings: Sound), and the slider set up high?
If so, check to see if you have the default engine sounds loaded on your system (should be a bunch of wav files each default aircraft's \sound folder)
If the sounds files are there, please make sure they're not 0 byte files and play them to make sure they work.
If all checks out, let us know and we'll try some other things.
I'm thinking that your default sounds are not loaded because some downloaded aircraft provide replacement sound files, while others just alias (use) the default sounds, so if there's a problem with the default sounds, those add-ons that use them won't have sound either.

Ben, Thanks for the info. Yes I did check the default engine sounds. Checked audio compression, I just don't know what else to check. Ive called MS, gateway, and still no sounds(engine). Weird thing is I have flap sounds, etc. I checked the sounds folders for all the planes, and if they have the default sounds they did not work. But if I play them on my Media player they will play. One ? should they be read-only checked in the properties box? I m just running out of ideas, and any would be appreciated. Thanks Jeff

Greetings Jeff:
- Which version of DirectX do you have installed?
- What soundcard do you have?
- Are there any yellow ! (exclamation marks) in Control Panels: System: Device Manager?
- Do you have the latest drivers installed for your soundcard?
If you've covered all of these things, here are some things to try:
1. Try renaming FS2000.cfg to FS2000.old and start FS again.
2. Try turning down your soundcard acceleration in Control Panel: Multimedia: Audio/Advance Properties: Performance.
Read only attributes for sounds shouldn't make any difference, but that does sound a bit unusual.
If none of these things work, please post us the contents of your sound.cfg file for the 182.
Thanks!
Ben

Oh, here's an old FS98 trick:
Try adding the following to FS2000.CFG.
Channels=1
SamplesPerSec=11025 Ben

Greetings again, Jeff:
Thanks for sending me your sound.cfg. I've emailed you a copy of my sound.cfg file. As you'll see, your file was missing quite a bit. Some add-on aircraft will replace your default sound.cfg files with their own (I hate that!), so either that happened or you've picked up a virus somewhere. (It's probably the former, but it doesn't hurt to scan for virus' periodically.)
If your 182 sounds come back, but the sounds for other default aircraft don't, you'll have to replace those sound.cfg files as well. The simplest way to do that is to uninstall and reinstall FS. I know you've mentioned that you've tried that before, but it sounds like (pardon the pun!) you didn't fully uninstall FS2K in the first place. (Note that FS2K's uninstall doesn't really uninstall all of the files it needs to. Please see the FS2K FAQ here on at the VPC for step-by-step help.)
Hope this helps!
Ben

Greetings Jeff:
Glad you got it all sorted out.
One of my pet peeves about add-on aircraft is they sometimes muck up your cfg files up without asking--and to make matters worse, they don't return them back to their original conditions after uninstalling them!
Thanks for joining us and Welcome to the VPC!
