I downlaoded (boy was that a wait!) X-Plane a while back out of curiosity as well. This was about 6-8 months before the comercial release, so I'm not sure what changes have occured in the game, but I just didn't like it. I wouldn't know about flight handling (never had my hands on a *real* yoke in all my life), so I can't really comment on that. The graphics were top notch as far as scenery went, although I never found any major cities. But the promise to be able to land on buildings didn't hold up in my version. (OK, so trying to land on the tower isn't something every pilot would do, but there weren't any other buildings around!)
The camera angles weren't very well thought out, with the "chase" view, not chasing, but more hovering a distance away from the plane, and constantly pointing in one direction. Also, NO DAMAGE! I tried my hardest to break that little mono-plane's wings off, but it just kept bouncing! At least FS stops when you wouldn't be able to go any further!
Like I said, I don't have the retail version, so my opinions may be as out-of-date as my Pentium 166 (no, I didn't use that for X-Plane, I used a K6-2 350). But that's my say. NEXT! lol
