This is something that you see all the way through TechNet. I never cease to be amazed. The last reviewed date on this article was 10/10/02 but no indication on when it might be fixed. Something for SP4 I guess. Well, NT4 wasn't really useful until post SP4 so this is about par for the course. You're right about the work-round if you want to use the Explorer tree structure. I'm usually looking for files somewhere specific so a couple of Start - Run's opens the shares I'm interested in without the pain of going through the browser service.
