A fairly amusing story about one of our "No-Frills" Airline GO. Taken from The Times 23rd March 2002;-----------------------------------------------------------
Passengers on Go Flight 612 from Newcastle to Stanstead knew they were on a no frills airline, but they reasonably assumed that the man at the controls knew how to get them down again.
After more than 30 minutes circling over the Essex airport, they sensed something was wrong. Their fears were confirmed when on of the two pilots came on the public address system to confess he, er, not quite passed his driving test.
Gasps from startled passengers filled the cabin as the pilots decided that the only safe course of action was to divert to East Midlands. Unexpected fog has descened on Stanstead as the aircraft approached its intended destination. Once safely on the ground after a bumpy landing at the alternative fog-free airport the red faced pilot emerged to confess to his passengers that he was still in training, and not yet qualified to land in fog.
Go said yesterday that pilots cannot land in visibility of less than 219 Yards until they have had three practives runs using the aircraft's instrument landing system.
Flight 612 was on of the unnamed pilot's practise runs. His co-pilot was fully qualified, but CAA rules say that both pilots must be fully qualified in instrument landing in case ones faints, dies, or is otherwise disabled at the last minute.
