"IFR Flying, SIDs, STARs, VORs etc!"
03-12-02, 21:03z

Hi All

Some of you may recently know that I have managed to fix most of my current internet connection to enable me to play games online with VATSIM (with British Airways Virtual!) Also this means I'll hopefully be able to use FlightAdventures Flight Rooms!

Although ATC personal are getting very annoyed with me because I can only fly VFR - Direct GPS, and I have no idea what they are on about when they ask me to fly to VORs, Holds etc. So I thought it was about time to learn IFR fully!

I headed over to VATSIM-UK.NET and they directed me to all these lovely charts which I can kind of dechipher, does anyone know of any good tutorials for absolute newbies to IFR, SIDs, STARs, Holding etc, (I have only actually had 2 hours of real life VOR training, and then I had to stop flying! :().

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Greetings Sam:

To follow Jerry's lead, I have two books on the subject. One covers it all, while the second just contains complete IFR flights that end in CATI ILS, CATIII ILS, LOC BC, and DME ARC approaches. The first is Instrument Flight Techniques with FS98. Although the title (which I fought to change) suggest it'll only work with FS98, the concepts, tutorials and questions used in it are not FS version specific.

The second is my FS2K Official Strategies and Secrets book (again, the flight information is not FS version specific despite the title). I included a bunch of approach plates and en route charts to use with the tutorials, but I don't get into the nitty gritty stuff that IFTw/FS98 does. The concept behind FS2K2 is it's assumed the reader has some of the IFR basics already.

As for learning VOR's, you might try playing with our VOR/NDB training app in the VPC Ground School. It does a wonderful job of helping you visualize how to work with NAVAIDs.

Hope this helps!

Ben

Hi again, Sam:

Here's a link that I recently ran across and forgot to mention:

http://www.jeppesen.com/wlcs/index.jsp?section=resources&content=publications_aopa.jsp

The articles are a bit too obtuse for my tastes (my eyes glaze over when I try to read some of that stuff), but they do cover every little thing about reading Jeppesen products. It's a free alternative to a book, so you might want to check it out.

Another source is Rod Machado told me a few months ago that he was working on a new IFR Survival Guide. You might check that out too.

have you already read through the ground school books that came with
FS2002? It's in the directory fs2002\help\gschool.pdf on the drive where
your FS2002 is installed.

They have sections about VOR and ILS. Maybe not very much stuff, but
something to begin with.

Guido

A very good free guide is available on Avsim. Written by an EMB-120 First Officer, it's called flyingifr.zip and it's in the FS98 Misc library. I have it printed out and on the bookshelf.

Hi Sam,

I finally found this page that you need to look at. Go to http://www.relia.net/~george/aviation/sim/ for a hands on visual guide to vor navigation. This is an outstanding java applet.

It looks exactly like the one we have in our Ground School section, Mike. :)

Hey Guys

Thanks for all the responses, I will be checking them all out today, I was messing around with the VOR trainer last night and found it a fun and interesting app to try and work out where the plane was with the random "Get Lost" feature, although I still need alot of practise at it!

Cheers

Greetings Sam:

Yep, the NAVAID trainer is a really useful tool. I wish it existed when I was learning radio navigation.

I wasn't planning on holding ground school classes (which are logable incidentally and upon completion, I can sign you off to take your written exam although only for the US exam) until we sorted out the other issues we have here (OLR, and Flight Rooms -- Aircraft Sales will be online in a few days!), but if you have any specific questions about any of this stuff, please let me know.

When Ground school starts you can bet your bottom dollar I'll sign up! I have missed flying sooo much since I had to give it up in October 2000 (5 hours off my PPL :( ), and it seems to be infectious I've got nearly everybody in my flat using/playing it, we all were on VATSIM earlier, flying for British Airways virtual, it was excellent, even though my mate Steves Left Gear collapsed on the runway of a questionable approach to Zurich!

Thanks Again

Hi Sam,

2 hrs real world flying...that's 2 hrs more than me :-)

If that IFR training aid here is the one I think it is, it is a great help to visualise where you are in relation to the NAVAIDs.

A couple of links to free tutorials.

www.avsim.com and click on the 'The AER' at the top of the page.

And a shameless plug for the VA I have just started flying for <G>

http://avsim.com/geoffschool/

That is a link from Britannic VA http://britannia.esmartweb.com/crew_centre.htm, the CEO wrote the tutorials.

Hope they help.

Hiyas Vulcan

> 2 hrs real world flying...that's 2 hrs more than me :-)

Well I've actually logged... *looks at logbook*... around 36 Hours (6 of those Solo), I was quite close to my licence just had exams, and a couple of skills tests to do, but I was falling behind at college, my money was running out, so I had to make the decision to stop, I hated it!

Thanks much appreciated! My printers gonna be so over loaded tomorrow printing this stuff out :) I've just joined British Airways Virtual, whats your callsign on VATSIM? Mines BAW574, also look out for my flat mate Ben BAW608, and Steve BAW757.

If you fancy a flight any time just drop us an e-mail or post on the Message Board!

Saw your flight on radar last night heading up from Spain. I was flying a 777 from Glasgow to Stanstead (BAW550). Went really well, ATC on voice all the way. Just forgot to use the Heavy suffix on my callsign:-)

I'm still Pilot On Training until I get my 20 hrs in and I am NOT logging onto VATSIM with a callsign of POTxx <VBG>

I am still debating whether to join BAV or not, may be a bit later on.

BTW BAW608 isn't that famous Ben Alexander-Brown is it?
