"Old User needs New Help!"
03-11-02, 16:18z

While I have been computing for more years than my wife cares to count....I have never mastered programming other than punching the correct buttons on a Smith CDU in a 747-400 for NWA.

Years ago now.

I now plead guilty to over indulging in computers and monitors for a home cockpit setup...and that is the reason for this message.

If any one would have the time to tell me HOW to setup a .bat file for WinXP to enable me, when starting up my computers, to AUTOMATICALLY load in FS2K2.

What I would like to do is simply press the ON button.....and then let the computer and WinXP coordinate themselves to boot up and automatically load in Flightsim 2002 with no other actions of mouse or keyboard on my part.

I would be totally in your debt.....even without buying more computers or monitors!

Thanks in advance,

Cap'n Tarmack

Greetings Tarmack:

I don't have XP, but I'd imagine FS2K2 (or any program for that matter) would load on startup if you dragged it to your Startup folder. Of course you could then set a default flight and turn off the welcome screen too and you'd be all set.

LOL! Nah, you need more monitors to bring the title back to US soil! :)

Ben,

Thanks for the hint.

Funny thing is.....it only works on 3 out of my 8 computers.

I do and did the same thing to all 8 of them for the various programs that I would like to start up after booting up.

pfd.exe
cdu.exe
mcp.exe
qm.exe
wideclient.exe
fs2002.exe

3 of the computers successfully launch into FS2K2 automatically....the other 5 do not either start FS2K2 or the other programs.

In WinXP the startup folder is buried in........

c:\Documents and Settings\default\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

All of my confusers are running WinXP Pro.....due to the fact that WinXP Home only supports a LAN with 5 or fewer computers.

Can't figure out why IF your suggestion works on 3 that it won't work on the others.

Greenie.........you still around with more good answers?!!

Regards,

Mel
PS....the total is now 11 LCD flat screen monitors and one 4 inch CRT. Tell those overseas boys that the ante was upped. Grin.

I'm always around, but I don't know about the good answers though <g>.

My guess though is that maybe that paths aren't correct. If you do a drag and drop make sure you do it with a RIGHT click and choose the option to "create shortcut" rather than "copy." Weird though how you were able to get it working on three of 'em. I'll mess around with it here and see what I come up with. Also, you may want to try to isolate the problem by trying to start *just* FS on those computers first, then add the other programs to the startup group one by one until it chokes.

Also, the easy way to get to the startup group as a window is to hit start|programs then double click on the startup group thingy. It will then open in it's own window.

Greenie,

Thou most "greenest" one has just earned the highest GOLD star for your advice.

Worked like a charm.......that WAS my problem.....I used the wrong darn mouse key.....the LEFT one.....instead of the Right one.....and your hint on how to access the Startup folder.....reminds me of Cockpit Resource Management........a guy can do everything the hard way if his head is up in the wrong place....but by asking a question, now and then, he can learn sumpin !

Thanks SO much,

Mel

ROFLOL! I'm glad it worked out. That's a common mistake. If you left mouse and copy the file, it's all there by it's lonesome without any of it's support files. A shortcut to the file is the ticket!

>>and your
hint on how to access the Startup folder.....<<

I found that by accident during the beta! Actually, I find a lot of stuff by accident <g>.

Not having XP on any system here, I'll have to defer to greenie on this one.

One for you thou in that you run multi monitors/pc's :-) Using widevieW (2002 version) how do you stop the "Out of Memory" crashes??
