"Complex aircraft training"

I'd like to find some training materials for flying complex aircraft, such as the Beech Baron. My "real world" experience is in simpler aircraft types - Piper Warriors, Cessna 172s, and Aeronca Champs. I'd like to know what I should be doing with mixture and prop controls. Any pointers to appropriate materials would be appreciated.

Greetings William:

The only materials on the subject that I know of are in my books, but the short course is mixture works the same in Barons as they do in Warriors and 172's (lean above 3,000' and rich below 3,000' and before takeoff and landing).

There was a thread here about prop controls here a few months ago. You might search for it. It often helps if you think of prop control as a transmission overdrive in a car (which you only use during cruise). The only times you regularly adjust props are after 500' AGL on takeoff to keep RPM in the green arc, and set it to something lower during cruise (you need cruise charts to figure the fuel burn, and cruise speeds). The only time you use the highest RPM is during takeoff and landing.

I have that concept, but haven't found much in the books I already own. Even Nick Dargahi's discussion was somethat thin on mixture, and especially on prop controls. I'll keep looking. I'd like to find some target numbers for rpm and manifold pressure under different conditions - climbing, level cruise, descent, that sort of thing.

Climbing you pretty much use anything in the green arcs. Most of the time that means the top of the green arcs for RPM and MP. For turbocharged aircraft, it's very important to keep MP in the green unless the turbo has a wastegate. For cruise, the best economy is usually lowest RPM and highest MP, but this varies from aircraft to aircraft. You need to have cruise charts to find out about a particular aircraft. Descent is pretty much the same as cruise config except MP is reduced to descend.

I printed cruise charts for most of the newer aircraft in FS in my various books. I don't know of any other place to find cruise charts other than the POH's for the aircraft in question.

Okay, okay, I get the hint. I have several books on the shelf from MS, Jeppesen, and others - but obviously not yours. I actually may have a Piper Warrior POH here somewhere, but that was strictly fixed prop. So I better find your book, right?

The motivation, just so you know, is that I became intrigued with Amelia Earhart's round the world flight attempt - as described in Nick Dargahi's book. I since came upon another book about her flight, and was fascinated. I am on my way around, following in her footsteps. Which brings me to another question:

I got the Lockheed Electra aircraft off the CD in Nick Dargahi's book. It works fine with FS98. But in FS2K2, I get the aircraft, but no panel at all. How do I move that FS95/98 aircraft to FS2K2, and get a workable panel?

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, that depends on which aircraft you're looking for info on. If it's a Baron, you won't find it any of my books as it wasn't a stock aircraft when I was writing for Microsoft of Sybex.

I'm not familiar with that particular aircraft and hopefully some of the other guys will chime in here, but the unfortunate truth is not all aircraft will import to a newer version, however, it may be that in your situation you're not moving all of your gauges or something like that.

Did you ever try importing that aircraft in FS2K?

Not yet. That's an idea to try. Won't be able to get to it for a day or two, but I might see if it works.
