"Online flying"
02-24-02, 21:00z

Just took my first try at flying with online ATC. A real blast & enjoyed it immensely.

Everything went well until I tried to switch to departure at EGLL. Then I was getting lots of Expired messages with ATC callsigns against them, including the ones I was after. Eventually I dropped the connection and the PC crashed shortly afterwards. Was this a problem with my PC?

EGLL tower (no ground) was REALLY busy and the stress was showing :-) Overheard while taxiing:

"BAW1000 taxy clear of the active... Oh, you have already... Better taxy to the stand then... you know what I mean... happens to the best of us." Made me smile anyway (whilst juggling too many bits of paper around the keyboard).

Hi Andrew,

Isn't it just :D

A braver man than I to try your first on line flight in the UK on a Sunday, the busiest night of the week.

I am not sure what you mean by 'expired ATC callsigns'.

i would say however that if you are using one PC for on line flying then it does tax your system and maybe that's why the PC crashed.

When it is busy there can be a lot of 'lag' (much traffic and slow response) and Sb has been known to lock up, again maybe a factor in your problems.

I would suggest trying during the week when it is quieter and see if things are more stable.

I use 2 PCs and can use the 'old' SB client and don't need the new one for FS2k2, that may also be a factor in the crash.

I would suggest posting to the VATSIM forum at www.avsim.com but the responses there seem very slow; you may be better posting to the VATSIM-UK newsgroup.

I bet like me you wonder why you have been flying alone all this time :-)

Tried it again last night and things were much quieter. Only problem was, London Control didn't hand me off or otherwise tell me I was leaving his airspace, as I was expecting. By the time I'd realised something was amiss and gave him a call I was overhead Manchester at FL140. Made for an interesting call to Manchester tower :-) -- BAW550 is overhead at FL140, requesting vectors for the ILS!

I'm using Fly!2 and there's apparently a problem with SB when the message buffer overflows. With the number of messages scrolling on Sunday I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did before crashing. Lefteris has a beta version available which I shall try. It has some problems with text you type not being visible to controllers, but as I'm using voice I can live with that.

I didn't get a lot of practice with the RT when I was training as Shipdham, (now sadly closed), only offered a Flight Information service (guy at the bar with a handheld<g>). I've got the RT coursebook though, and a study of that beforehand reaped dividends.

Online flying has really only become feasible recently with an unmetered ISDN connection. It was just too expensive before. Wouldn't want to give it now though.
