"Moved the "Pit" to the Garage!"
02-22-02, 22:06z

From Mel:
========================================
Guys,

Here are some shots of my newly completed home cockpit....moved everything....8 computers, 10 TFT screens, LAN, Router, PFC throttle quad with 2 engprop and 4 engine jet plug ins, the Rob Howard constructed CDU, the Go-Flight complete line with 4 P8's, 2 T8's,LGT and 4 GF-45's, along with a new program called AirPlan that comes complete with the ENTIRE U.S. Sectional charts.........out to a new "room" constructed in the garage.....where there is an ASHTRAY, a beer fridge and a HDTV. Grin.

Oh yes.......it is air conditioned too........and copilot Curtiss The Dawg has his doggy bed so as to be able to guard the pit at night.

Not shown but running is a beta copy of FlightMax from John Hnidec that will also be used every day when flying and when I am released from beta work. Under the outside window displays is a 17x3 inch 'ledge' that awaits the Aerosoft 747MCP, due to be released later this month.

Some tidy up work to do yet.....but this is my best effort to date.....and it was a lot of work......but worth it!

All of the computers run WinXP thanks to the "encouragement" from Greenie !

Regards,
Mel

Ben,

Thanks for posting the pictures.......I readily understand that this is not earthshaking news. Grin.

Just wanted to add that I have really "taken" to flying DC-3's in my FS2002 setup and that is the airplane that was used for these pictures....hence the rather limited view over the nose.

I just downloaded a neat 18 meg file(Flightsim.com)........with nothing but
MAPS and directions to fly a circular route around the Pacific from
Miami.......southwest....and then west and then north to Japan....and on to
Anchorage and then finally back to Miami....to circle the Pacific with about
40 different "Island' stops........and I am going to do it in the
DC-3........looks like about 32,000 miles and at 140 miles an hour....I
shall be entertained for quite some time. Grin.

I can't imagine how much 'oil' I will burn....but the fuel burn looks reasonable!

Regards,

Cap'n Tarmack

Would love to hear/see a list of all of your stops along the way. I have a hard time picturing how you're going to make the ocean crossing. What is the range of the DC-3? Better make sure your floatation gear is in good order too! :)

Well, don't forget the sun tanning oil for those pacific islands either! :)

Ben,

The files are named pactour1.zip and pactour2.zip and can be found on flightsim.com The maps and routes are in .PDF format so I can't copy and paste them here........but there are a total of 112 stops on the "cricle" of the Pacific and the routing lists the ICAO identifiers of each airport.....so any GPS worth its salt is going to be able to help you find any particular airport...certainly the magenta CDU and MCP can do it!

Most legs are under 300 nautical miles with the exception of the leg between Galapogos SEGS and SCIP at Easter Island...that is a 1946 mile run.

That looks like about a 13 to 14 hour leg.......so the fuselage tanks will have to be used. Grin.

From Easter Island to French Polynesia is only a 10 hour hop....and then until you leave New Tokyo Narita....all legs are quite short. Utilizing Russian airspace and Shemya...to Anchorage and then the Canadian airports for the flight back down to Miami makes the flight possible....and intriguing!

Certainly a real FLIGHTADVENTURE. Grin.

Regards,

Cap'n Tarmack

Mmmm... cool... I love that sort of island-hopping trip. I did the Miami to Venezuela trip (and return via a different route) in a DC-3... I guess it was back in FS5 days. Landing that tricycle gear on those short runways was quite a challenge.

If you've got some good cigars there to go with that ashtray I will have to come for a visit. :-)

Rick,

Not to worry, living in the Florida area with a large seaport at Cape Canaveral for the cruise ships provides MANY opportunities for GOOD cigars from Cuba........duty free of course. Grin.

Mel

Oops... I said "tricycle gear" and I meant "taildragger" of course. I used to come to FL every year. I visited with Gunner once. These days we don't have any plans to come down that way but if I do I'll have to make a pilgrimage to see "The Pit".

I can't even begin to imagine the pucker factor of trying to find those places by ded reckoning.

Hey Mel,

Sure it is...for us anyway, wishing we had a rig like yours <g>. It really sounds to me like Mallmack moved the smoking section to the garage <g>. That's what happened here anyway .

The rig look great!!

Precisely.......and this time I added a HUGE ceiling exhaust fan.....and ran 4 inch ducting from the outflow to the eaves and then ported the airflow downward out of the eaves.

Result.....even two guys smoking cigars can't be charged with second hand smoke in the main hacienda. Grin.

I just added a real world "intercom" system to the pit and have an instructor station built behind the main cockpit.......I have been giving some "instruction" for holding patterns, both VOR and ADF, to a couple of old timers from the airport.......and when they crawl out of the seat and shake hands........why heck.......those hands are "sweaty".

That means only one thing.......they were IN a cockpit!

LOL! I had plans to something similar in the 'pooter room, but my bride suggested that it would be easier and less costly to just smoke in the garage. How could I argue with that logic? <g>

Careful! The next step is "since you're spending so much time out there, you might as well sleep there!"

Of course, that too has it's benefits <G>.

James,

Well, Rob Howard tells me that the Smith keyboard/CDU interface costs something in the range of OVER 10,000 dollars....and the next guy that "talks" him out of his creation is going to have to pay the full price. grin.
