"Win XP, FS2K, SB problems"
02-07-02, 23:04z

Running Windows XP, FS2K, and SB 2.3 (b4). I start by setting up Multiplayer, leaving all IP boxes blank. I start SB and immediately get an error box "Override".
I click OK and SB loads.
I start SB and connect via TCP/IP leaving the IP box blank. I begin searching for a connection and SB apparently cannot locate any games to connect.
I click "Cancel" and then I receive a "Critical Error: Could not open file," the file being "icao.dat"
I then click OK and SB loads.
When I log on to the network, I get no real-world weather and obviously no Multiplayer capabilities.
I then check the ServInfo and see that my FP has been filed but any other information is not available such as my flight status, etc.

Any suggestions to correct this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Try using IPX instead of TCP/IP.

I am not using Win XP but that works for me.
Hope that will solve your problem.

Bill

In other versions of Windows you could try using IPX/SPX but I don't think Windows XP includes any IPX/SPX protocols or allows you to install them :(.

Have you tried running SB in Windows XP compatibility mode for Windows 9x? If so: how does this affect the program?

-Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

>>I don't think Windows XP includes any IPX/SPX protocols or allows you to install
them<<

Actually, the IPX/SPX protocols are included with XP, they just aren't installed by default.

Thanks for the correction, Mike.
When Windows XP was still in the development stage I was under the impression that Microsoft were to do away with IPX/SPX and received a lot of criticism about it.
I wasn't sure whether or not MS had changed their minds about this or not and not being a regular user of Windows XP I haven't been able to check.

-Stephen.

Hi Stephen,

>>I wasn't sure whether or not MS had changed their minds about this or
not and not being a regular user of Windows XP I haven't been able to
check.<<

Yup, they sure did want to get rid of it. Thanks to very vocal beta testers such as myself <g>, they reversed that decision.

Most "Green" one,

And all of thank YOU for that input....to the MS big wigs.....and while I could not really here you here on the "right coast".......the "left coast" must have. Grin.

I am presently in the sawdust and wallboard dust construction phase of a new home cockpit in the garage...will have 4 walls, a roof, an A/C and a beer fridge.

Just installed the PFC Throttle Quadrant today.....and it turned my Jetliner Yoke into a dream.....along with the rudder pedals AND brakes...that never worked before in WinXP....but sure do now !

Regards,

Mel

Hi Mel,

No need for the translation of the first note...I got it <g>. You're more than welcome. Ya know there are so many "nay-sayers" and anti-MS folks in our midst, and I just wish that MS could make the beta forums "public." If so, these folks might sing a different tune. MS *does* listen to the testers, and the dev team (for whatever product) does whatever is within their power to satisfy us.

Points in case regarding WinXP:

Including multi monitors in the home version (initially only the pro version had that capability)
Including the ipx/spx network protocols
Taking some of the teeth out of product activation. That includes, the 120 day reset of the pid key, and moving from 4 hardware changes to 6
Putting the netbui protocol back in (although it's in a buried directory on the cd). They *really* balked at that <g>
...and many other minor, niggly problems that were fixed that weren't really "bugs" per-se.

No OS or flight sim will ever be perfect, but MS is doing things right, and they're most certainly closer than anyone else at this point. I challenge *ANYONE* that types M$ over MS to show me another company that gives as much bang for the buck than most MS products! Hell, for 69 bucks (US) I'll probably have 1000 hours in on FS2002 before FS2004 is released. I think that's about $0.07 per hour? I won't even do the math on my copy of WinXP that runs 24/7 on my main computer at a retail price of $99US <g>.

OK, off my soapbox...fer now <g>.

So....MallMack finally made you move to the garage??? <VBG>
