"FS2002 freeze"
02-03-02, 22:51z

FS2002 keeps freezing up on me. Have tried microsoft for an answer with no results. Anyone out there know where I should start?
Also: I have an extra 80 GByte hard disc which I use to back up any program costing more than $50, particularly when there are 3 CD's. I then try loading from my backup to be sure it is OK. When I tried this with FS2002 I get an error notice. Apparently this is Bill Gate's effort to prevent piracy. I paid 64 bucks for this; anyone know how to overcome this block?

Greetings sipapu:

>should start?

Try our FAQ's about getting support here. We need a lot of information in order to help you. Have a look at the FAQ's as they'll tell you what the most common problems are and if that doesn't solve your particular issue, it'll state what information is necessary to try and track down your problem.

Regarding the copy protection, just do a full install from the original discs, then keep your original discs in a safe place (you won't need them to play the game). If you do this you won't need to back them up on your HD.

I've now had to re-load FS02 four times. And tonight's will be fifth. At this rate I'll wear the darn things out...

You can be sure I'll expect Mr. Gates to replace the CD's free of charge if they don't load one day. He's had enough of my money already.

I'll be flying the Rally this week in FS98 for just that reason. I'm darned if I'm going to be dumped in mid-Atlantic with a totally black screen.

Regards
Kit (in Captain Cynic mode...)

Why do you need to reload FS2K2 so many times? Perhaps we can help you isolate the problem.

Found something that might help others with freezing on FS2002.
Went to Display: Properties>Settings>Advanced>Performance
Then slid the slider to the left with following results:
Hardware Acceleration:
On full = program lockup
1 Notch to left (Most functions) = lockup
2 Notches to left (Basic functions) = works in safe mode .

Safe mode yields miserable pictures, so it is not the answer; but perhaps knowing what is happening can give a clue in cleaning it up.

Does this help. Also forgive me but I am new to the web site. How does one get to the FAQ's?

Hi sipapu,

It shouldn't be necessary to reduce hardware acceleration to get FS2002 to run properly. It's important that as few programs as possible are running alongside FS. A useful free utility called EndItAll is available from: -

www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,0011NB,.htm

Install it and see how you get on. You might also try DirectX diagnostics (v8.1 is the latest) by going to Start, Run and typing dxdiag and pressing OK.

Finally, the latest graphics card drivers are vital. Visit your manufacturers web site and pick up the latest. If you have an nVidia chipset visit www.nvidia.com.

The FAQ option is accessible from the main Flight Adventures menu or by clicking here: -

www.flightadventures.com/faq_main.htm

My game used to freeze up also. I tried using the compadibility setting in XP Help and Support. I use Windows 98, ME or 2000. Now I still get the error messages, but the game plays much longer on the order of five or six hours before it crashes. I'm running Windows XP. Hope this helps. FS2002 is not compadible with XP.Also get all upgrades from Microsoft on line that seems to help to.

The most common cause that I've run across for systems that run for a few hours then crash usually is a result of a heat problem. If you know that you don't have anything overclocked on your system, you might try opening the case up and blowing a fan directly into it and see if it still locks up.

Hi all
I have a repeating and reproducible error, commonly called a true bug.

Microsoft was very helpful by phone, but I complained to them about the maze in finding a support email on the fs website. The tech said she would post a suggestion to implement better support links on the FS site. I was amazed that the first support option you find is the phone one in the manual. Rather burdensome for MS.

Anyway, I have a brand new Turtle-Beach Santa Cruz sound card that suppose to have directX support. If you set sound acceleration to full (via run dxdiag.exe). Start a flight with LearJet (possibly others but not with the Cessna or floatplane or Patty W. plane) When you hit shift-S to cycle out to spot plane view you will black out go to BSOD with possibly sound card driver named or not. hit a key get another BSOD, hit another, closes FS and you can not shut down windows and the sound driver is internally scrambled.

Reset, back set the dxSound to basic or none and it works ok.

I would suggest going to dxdiag and trying lowering the sound or quicker yet when you start the flight quickly hit Q to turn off sound. I think it will run without incident indicating the need to reduce the sound acc.

You can also reduce video accleration but that would point to a prob with the video driver.

I am running win98FE (not a forgiving os) but may apply to others.

I also found lowering the sound quality slider in FS adds about 2 FPS without noticeable sound loss.

Hi Guys
I also have FS2K2 "freezing" mostly while I try to land and when I am in final (I am a beginner) ...I did contact µsoft concerning a post found on an other FSim site about DirectX and AGP Texture Acceleration. this the response from µsoft :
"Hello Emile,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support.
I am Sathish, from Microsoft Consumer Games Support and I will be helping you today.
I understand from the mail that you wish to know on the outcome of disabling the AGP Texture Acceleration and its effect on the FS2002 game.

Emile, it is true that we need to disable the AGP Texture Acceleration to resolve issues of game freezing.
This behavior occurs when there is conflict between the display adapter and directx.
By this method the usage of AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) for all display devices on the system which support it will be disabled.
And, the primary reason is to avoid the conflict of the display device.
Though disabled the graphics and performance of the game will not be affected much.
This is only a troubleshooting step.
I hope this information helps.
If in case you need further clarifications please feel free to contact us and I will be glad to assist you.
I am looking forward to your response and thank you again for using Microsoft Online Support.
Regards,
Sathish.T"
I will try , any comments for the experts?
Emile

Hi Emile,

First of all what graphics card are you running 2002 on?

Secondly and contrary to popular believe :-) the latest driver for the board may not be the best one.

Before disabling any thing I would check the driver version and either go up a driver set or go back some. Try this and see what results you get.

James

Hi Emile,

Your card spec is about the same as mine although my card is a 3D Prophet MX 64Meg but it uses the Nvidia Display Drivers. NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 Display Driver Version 2312.

Cant understand why your card is 64Meg but only showing a Display Memory of 31.5 Mb??

Your driver version 1311 should be fine as I used that version till recently. Change your screen res to 1280 x 1024 with Color quality at Highest (32 bit) and see what happens. Also go into DXDIAG and turn your sound option 1 notch down.

James

James,

I don't know if you are aware but there was/is a debug setting in the DirectX sound section, the 'Net gurus suggest turning this off and I think it was related to freezes.

You need another program to get at this setting 'dxcplv8.zip' (can't remember where I got it).

This installs in the control panel (as the name suggests) and allows access to DX settings, might be worth a try for Emile.

Hello James, Ben and Alan
Sorry for late response but I was busy at the office (priority 1) and testing FS2K2

>Cant understand why your card is 64Meg but only showing a

* This Vid card is a model 64 and has 32MByte memory
>That's interesting. Emile, have you tried messing with you AGP memory settings in BIOS?
Ben
* (:o)No, I did NOT "mess" in the BIOS (I do not know how to do!)(}>)
Now what is the status?(:-()
First I want to clarify what is for me "freeze" : While flying FS2K2 the application "minmizes" , I receive the standard Win98 window with all the icons, I have to "click" the FS2K2 box at the bottom to "maximize" the FSim and it runs again.
1/ With "AGP Texture Acceleration disabled AND sound reduced 1 level in DXDIAG : FS2K2 still freezes
2/ I did enable again the AGP and reduced the sound to basic : FS2K2 still freezes(x()

I think Alan is right I will try to add a vent and see the results
(:q:)
Some recommendations ? Thanks in advance

You'll need to look in your computer's manual if you're not familiar with your computers bios. But beware, if you set it up incorrectly, you may not be able to boot your computer again to get help from us. If you can tell us which brand and model computer you have (or at least the mother board) we might be able to help you.

Hmm, that sounds like an extraneous key command being sent to your system. Are you running a joystick or other controller with programmable buttons?

What you refer to as "freezes" is not what we expected. Regardless, try flying with the SWFFP disabled and see if you still have the same minimize problem.

Ahh, there was a lot if posts within the Beta Newsgroup on this Joystick and the CH stuff and for the life of me I can't find it. It must have scrolled off the system (mine). As Ben stated/suggested, remove the JS and using your keyboard carry out a flight and see what happens.

Hi Emile,

I've got an NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64 Pro card (PCI, not AGP) with 32MB and I've also had problems when running FS. I spent a long time trying to find software conflicts and better drivers, but in the end, I found that the problem was heat.

The card worked perfecftly for every program, except FS98. It seems that only FS uses the card's 3D mode, and its the extra workload in 3D mode that generates just enough heat to make the card crash after a while.

I now run the computer with the lid off, and when I want to run FS, I switch on the desk fan next to the computer to blow away the heat. I've not had any more problems.

Alan
