The only thing I can think of is some controller (keyboard or programmable controller like a joystick, etc.) is sending erroneous escape or backspace keystrokes. What I'd suggest is rebooting and trying again. If you still have a problem, I'd look towards the aforementioned controller(s). Please let us know if that doesn't fix it for you.
