Meigs Field to remain open until at least 2006!
Likely 'til 2026!!!
Governor Ryan & Mayor Daley agree on deal that will assure the life of Meigs Field.
On Wednesday, December 5, 2001, the "Coolest Little Airport on the Planet" received new life: An extension of its life by 4-24 years or longer.
At a joint press conference, IL Gov. Ryan and Mayor Richard Daley announced a comprehensive agreement on airport capacity for the Chicago region, a plan that includes keeping Meigs Field open for up to 24 or more years (with some conditions, including an option for the Illinois Legislature to vote Meigs out of existence as early as 2006.)
To Gov. Ryan:
All 6,000+ members of the Friends of Meigs Field say:
"Thanks for your vision, leadership and tenacity for all of general aviation."
To every person and organization who has been involved in the effort to preserve Meigs:
"Way to go, team!!! You're the best!"
Special kudos to:
National Business Aviation Association (convention next week in New Orleans, www.nbaa.org)
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (www.aopa.org)
Experimental Aircraft Association (www.eaa.org)
The Chicago "DODO" Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc.
The other 25+ organizations who have joined the Meigs Action Coalition (meigsaction.net)
And most of all, enormous thanks to the EXCELLENT VOLUNTEERS of the Friends of Meigs Field, particularly the Executive Committee that has dedicated itself to twice-monthly meetings for 5 years in an often hopeless-appearing cause.
Details on the agreement are still sketchy, and (as we saw last week) the "devil is in the details," but all indications are that everybody whose cynical friends bet them a buck that Meigs would close in February should be a dollar richer today.
