"Thin clouds in FS2002"
12-04-01, 05:39z

I think I read here in a thread that you could fix the thin clouds phenomenom (when passing through a cumulous cloud, you look to the side and see you are passing through a paper-thin cloud) by making sure you have no text displays on the screen. I tried this yesterday... still had thin clouds. I'm assuming that this is just the way the FS2002 clouds are.

Hi Rick,

Do you have Co-ordinates and frame rate counter showing (Shift Z etc etc). If so, then cancel them out so they aren't on your screen and then take another look. They should be back to normal.

James.

That's what I meant by text display... I took the frame-counter off, window labels, zoom labels, etc... there were NO text displays on the window at all. The clouds were still flat on the edge.

The clouds I flew through today were NOT flat on the edge. <shrug> I don't know what the difference was yet.

I have had the same thing happen too but only when flying thru the clouds and glancing left or right...thin clouds..lol I dont have any of the text running either when doing this. Kind of gives a whole new meaning to the word stormfront...lol

Yeah, that's when you see it. You NEVER see this phenom from a distance. I am always looking around so it's a real problem sometimes. I have been doing a lot of flying at night and/or dawn/dusk and I don't see this problem at all. I have no idea if the problem relates to the time of day, or something completely different but I haven't seen the problem in the last day or two and all of my flying has been NOT in full daylight. <aside..Man, the ground textures at night are fantastic. The little pools of light in the town/city areas are just great.> I've been having too much fun to work on re-creating the situation where the problem occurs. But I don't think it has anything to do with the text displays.

Yeah those ground textures at night have forced me to keep a drool cup near my monitor at all times lol I get so caught up in looking around at all the beauty in the textures and scenery it is just too cool.

Hi Rick,
you may recall that I posted the original message concerning the paper thin clouds. Thought it was a driver problem at first, but for me, it did have a direct correlation with the text on the screen. This even includes the atc messages. I can be going through one of the offending paper clouds with either the atc message or the 'shift + z' text and the second I remove them both from the screen, I can see the cloud immediately 'grow' to the wispy specimines they should be. From my point of view, I havn't seen this phenominon under any other circumstances. (sure hope it never comes back. . . the full clouds are great!
Blessings,
Donn

It must be an issue of available video memory or something like that. My problem with thin clouds has gone away and I haven't seen them for a while but I don't know why. I've tried the "text on screen" a few times just to check but I haven't been able to make the problem appear.

What type of video card do you have Donn?

Today I put in a new motherboard and cpu (1.9GHz Pentium4... replacing a Pentium3 800MHz) and I was playing around with display settings to see what goodies I could now afford. I set the video resolution to the highest setting 1200x1000 or whatever it is specifically. Whaddya know, the thin clouds came back. And this time I could make them come and go by hitting the Control-Z key to take text on and off the screen. Going back to 1024x768 resolution made the problem go away. I think that one of the things that FS2002 cuts back on when it's lacking in resources to draw everything is to make the clouds less complex. Cutting the maximum frame rate down to 25 (from 40 where I had it set before) also helped the problem some. There are a lot of variables (I think) that can lead to the thin-clouds problem, but basically, too much display quality and complexity is what brings on the thin clouds.
