"First touchdown"
12-01-01, 18:23z

Hi Guys,

Just made my first touchdown here in my Mk XI Spitfire PL965-R.

It is nice to see familiar names in the message postings, including some names that I have not seen much since the old FSForum days.

The VPC looks good at first glance. Thanks to Greenie and all the others who are working hard to make this site happen. Much appreciated!

Jerry, nice to see your usual tagline over here too. :-)

Regards,
Melo
PL965 Spitfire pilot,
Glendale, CA

P.S. Spell check did not work. And another tip, be careful about using the back button. I typed this message twice.

Greetings Melo:

Welcome to the VPC!

>P.S. Spell check did not work.

The spell check we're currently using is from another site, so we don't have control over its consistent operation. However, we do have a new (actually better too) spell checker on our server that we're still working on, but has been moved down the priority list. Please stand by...

Good to see you here too. Did you fly in with the Connie or the DC-8?

It should be fun and informative, lots of familiar names here. And maybe some new opportunities to fly online together.

Be sure to talk to me before the first Rally flight when you want to use the Spitfire. The version you have is old, and the new one while still being adjusted, flies much better. I can get you an updated copy before the event even if the new PL965 is not ready for full scale production.

And even my Spitfire may not be able to keep up with some of the jets around here. :-)

Glad you like her as is. But I promise the updated version is a big improvement. :-) Just let me know if you want the update.

If the first Rally here is sometime in mid-January the flight dynamics should easily be in production form by then.

Just getting started on adding to the 3-D visual model.

But of course! :-) But no hurry - when you get it finished just give me a note here and then Email it. But, don't hurry yourself on my account - I have plenty to do while I'm waiting. (For instance, I need to get a handle on on line flying and the use of the flight rooms here. I don't yet understand how they all tie in together and if Squakbox and Roger Wilco are part of the package.... It's tough trying to understand Flight Simming 401 when you are still learning your ABC's :-D

Perhaps what we need to do is arrange a time and day so we can get everyone and our tech support and community crew together to walk who ever wants the help through the process. I'd recommend that everyone first make sure they can access the VPC chat client, and ideally, both the chat and VoiceCOM (Roger Wilco) system.

Any suggestions for a day and time that'd be good for everyone?

That'd really be helpful for us folks who have spent most of our time flying our own computers in the privacy of our own homes and now want to get on in the world. I have "flown", using squawk box in prep for an old FSFORUM fly in. But, am not sure how all these things work together. I do have Roger Wilco finally working on my machine - at least the "test" button allows me to record and playback a test count. It sounds like, and I know nothing <G>, there will be at least three programs running at once FS98, RW and 'something' from VPC...or maybe squawk box.... See how confused I am... :-)

>>Any suggestions for a day and time that'd be good for everyone?<<

Since I'm retired, nearly any time would be good for me so I defer to those folks who are still working to pick a convenient time......

Hi Jerry:

All you're missing now is our FlyNow client. Go to our Flight Rooms and download the FlyNow Beta. Install that then log on and register an account. Once that's done, you'll be all set to fly online.

The above is covered step by step in the tutorial I posted in another message. Please see my note to Vic for the final pieces.

We'll still hold an Intro Flight, but if you have look at this stuff I'm sure you'll figure it out. It just sounds confusing.

I have had FlyNow downloaded since I first joined here and I think I am registered. What I need now is a "step-by-step" like " First start FS98, then start Squawk Box. Send your flight plan via Squawk Box. Open Flight Rooms. Find a flight in progress. Click on ??? to enter the flight. You will now be in FS98 located at xxxx take off and ......

Without having experienced any of this I am having problems visualizing how they all work together. For example, when I open FlyNow, I am presented with a screen that allows me ot join or start a game. It looks nothing like the control panel of an airplane :-). What happens if I do join a game? I have no idea since I've never had the opportunity. do I then get to fly my airplane and converse with others? Or what does FlyNow do for me and how does it tie in with the flight rooms?

See how dense I am? Actually, when I get to experience it once, I'll probably understand the whole thing.....

Hi Jerry:

Sorry for all of the confusion. It's really very simple and as you've noted you'll laugh about all of this once you've seen it work. FlyNow! works just the way the Zone works. You connect to the server, log in, join or create a game and it'll automatically launch the game and connect all of the players.

Let's back up a bit. All that's need to fly mulitplayer is FlyNow! and your sim(s) of choice. RW is just used for voice communications (purely optional).

1. Connect to your ISP
2. Double Click FlyNow!
3. Click Connect
4. Login (or register a new account if you don't have one on the flight server)
5.a. To Join an existing Flight/Game:
- Click on the Join Game button from the menu on the left
- Select the Game you wish to join from the list
- Click the Join! button.
Once you've joined the game, wait for the Controller/Host to launch the game. Please be patient. Your game will launch automatically when the Controller/Host starts the session.

5.b. To Create a Flight/Game:
- Click on the Create Game button from the menu on the left side of Fly_Now!.
- Select the Game you with to create from the drop down menu.
- Enter a unique Gamename in the appropriate box (this is required)
- Click the Create! button to create the game.
- When every one is ready, click the Launch button. The game/sim will load itself and launch.

>Without having experienced any of this I am having
>problems visualizing how they all work together. For
>example, when I open FlyNow, I am presented with a screen
>that allows me ot join or start a game. It looks nothing
>like the control panel of an airplane :-).

Correct. It's just an application that allows people to chat and join a game without exchanging IP addresses, etc.. It automates the multiplayer launching process.

>What happens if I do join a game?

You'll be places in the host's game chat room until the host launches/begins the game.

>I have no idea since I've never had the opportunity.

Well, you're doing the right thing by asking, but if you just play with the app itself you'll see how it works. It's pretty intuitive (we think at least!), but you can't break anything, so go ahead and click things.

>do I then get to fly my airplane and converse with others?

Well, you get to fly what ever airplane is loaded in your sim of choice (we support other non-flight games as well). Conversing with others by text chat can be done within FS2Kx or by voice using RogerWilco.

>Or what does FlyNow do for me and how does it tie in with the flight rooms?

FlyNow! is the Windows version of the Web-based FlightRoom app we're building. Eventually FlyNow! will go away and be replaced by the FlightRoom web version. The only tie in we have with the FlightRooms now is the chat host uses the same server, so whether you're in the FlightRooms or on FlyNow!, everyone can converse with each other.

>See how dense I am? Actually, when I get to experience it
>once, I'll probably understand the whole thing.....

Yep, that's for certain. There's much more going on here talking about it than there is to the app itself! :)

:-) That may be why I'm having so much trouble getting my head around this thing - I never experienced "the ZONE"

Thanks for the detailed summary of how this thing works and what all the parts do to each other. I've printed it out and will play with it some. If more questions come up - you'll be the first to know :-). I see that you have scheduled an "introductory flight" in another thread here - will read that and hope to be able to join...

Thanks!!

Ok, Ben. I got down to "select the Game you wish to create from the drop down menu" with out a problem - looked like everything was working as I expected.

But, I have only one choice listed in the drop down menu - "Puzzle Bobble". I went ahead and chose that one (what else could I do?) and entered "Flight Simulator" as my unique game name thnking that maybe it was nomenclature that was confusing me.

I hit the "Start" button and it looked like something was happening - something like "entering Flight Simulator channel" but then, got a message "Game failed to launch" or something like that.

What did I do wrong - is there some setup or config exercise that I failed to go through with FlyNow that expands the choices in "game you wish to create"?

It's possible that you need to re-install FS, so that the settings are in the registry properly. That drop down menu looks for direct play compatible games in the registry. I had the same problem when I did a clean install of Windows XP. FS worked just fine, but since it wasn't in the registry, it didn't appear in the drop down menu.

Well sh..........ugar! That explains it all right there. I had to reinstall Windows after my fight with the SirCam virus and never re-installed FS after that 'cause it was working OK. Darn! And I won't have time to do that before tonight's con. Maybe - though - with this hint I'll be able to figure it out myself......

And now this is REALLY stupid. Tonight is Friday and I've been sitting here for 20 minutes waiting for someone to join the con - which, of course, is on Thursday! :P

Well at least it will give me time to reload FS so FlyNow can find it.

Thanks Mike.... I'll be in touch

OK guys, I reloaded Flight Sim and it now shows as a game that can be selected in FlyNow. BUT - now I don't seem to be able to connect with FlyNow. It says it is searching for the fastest server and just sits there. I have, in the past, been able to connect to the server so I did reinstall FlyNow, but still no connection :-( Has the server been having problems?

It hasn't been, but something hung up, so I rebooted the FlightServer just now. All is well for now. We'll have to keep an eye on it. It's the first time the thing has hung all of these months we had it running. But this is what beta testing is all about.

Thanks for the heads up.

Well....leave it to me. If something will break, I will be the one to break it :-)

Latest update - I was able to log on, create a flight and launch it, which started FS98 for me and I flew around my home airport and then over to Capital City for a landing (all alone of course) So I think I'll be ready to test fly it when you all sponsor another intro flight :-D

I am just guessing that it would be better to have FS up and running and maybe minimized before starting a FlyNow flight due to the time it takes FS to load once the "launch" button is hit.

That's OK, break away. If you can break it, so can someone else. We want to fix everything we possibly can during our beta period.

Fantastic! A couple of the guys fly every Sat evening at 7pm PT, so you can pretty much always catch someone there at that time.

Negative. You need to let FlyNow! launch the game for you or you may not connect to the multiplayer game.

Good idea, Ben. I have RW, MSChat and the FlyNow client working but I haven't the foggiest idea of how they relate to on line flying. A good walkthrough will be beneficial for all.

Greetings Vic:

Sounds like you're ready to go. All you need to do is login with FlyNow and either create or join an existing game. If you're the host, wait until all the players have joined you in your newly created gameroom, then click Start Game and you'll all be on your way.

To use RW, click on VoiceCOM from the main VPC window and you'll see a bunch of buttons with frequencies on them (all from KSBP if you're interested). We usually start on Unicom 122.95 before a flight, but you and your flight can select any channel to use. During your flight you can change channels at will by clicking on another channel. VoiceCOM will automatically launch and load the newly selected channel into RW for you.

You really don't need MSChat for online flights (FlyNow has it's own chat features). The only reason why I mentioned in another message is I was suggesting that we use that to help people figure out how to do the above in real time.

Anyway, please check out what I've described above. You don't need to have other players online to try it yourself.

Please let me know if you need clarification for anything.

Ben

I type short messages because I have short fingers ;)

Seriously, I think we need to have a demo flight. As a newbie, I don't want to get into an existing flight and crash into someone or otherwise breach nettiquette. I think an experienced online aviator ( Ben??) should schedule a flight with a lot of explanation time in the chat area.

I mean, I'd feel pretty silly sitting there in my 747 waiting to t/o from Miegs :)

Gee whiz, I find that, except for the Message Board this whole place is confusing to me. I don't quite "get it". I see all of this stuff on the menus but I don't really understand what all of it is or what I'm supposed to do etc. I start reading an explanation text and my eyes glaze over... I don't know if it's my short attention span or the writing or the way it's organized or what.

That's why this place is still in beta :-). There's still alot of work to do to integrate everything. For instance, right now the flightrooms don't really work as intended, hence the need for the Fly-Now app. Things will be much cooler once the flightrooms are working properly. Other things like the need to register and log-in at each place (message board, ACARS, Flight Rooms, etc) will go away as well. The goal here is to log in at the ACARS screen, which will log you into every area. Until that happens, things are admittedly confusing.

So for now, be patient, and continue to post gripes, so Ben and his thugs can fix them :-)

Yeah, I think it's the logins that are confusing the most at this point. I go into a section and it asks me to log in and it won't take the name and password that I already have. I wasn't aware that this was a beta problem.

Greetings Vic:

Here's the breakdown:

RW = (purely optional) voice communications application. Can be used for voice communications during any online activity (text chat, online sim flight, etc.)

MSChat = Text chat client. Not required for online flight, however, I suggested using it as a means of communications to answer questions/walk users through the online flight process in real time.

FlyNow! = Our Windows online multiplayer flight client. This connects players to our flight server and joins them all into respective online sessions. This is the only app required for online flight at the VPC.

If you come to the chat tonight we'll load up a game or two.

Hope this helps!
Ben

Hi Kit,

>I finally managed to find this place too, as you can see.

And I finally managed to get back home and get to this to reply.

We had a wonderful trip back east and visited almost all of our relatives. Saw everyone on both sides of the family except for one sister and brother of Lenia.

Also just got back today from buying a 2001 Toyota Corolla. Champagne colored, not blue :-(, otherwise a great car. <BG>

It has worked well for me from the start, but I have MS IE 5.5. Getting up to speed on the flight rooms might take a bit of work for me, much worse than the wrong mag. var. <g>

>Good to see lots of the Forum gang here too.

Yes, I agree. Nice to see some familiar people here. And some old FSForum guys who have not been around for a while too.
