"CH Yoke"
09-30-01, 18:47z

I have just recently updated to a CH Products FS Yoke. I have allocated Buttons/Switches to various functions and all work fine with the exception of the Rudder which I have placed on Rocker Buttons 03 & 04. Before take off, testing the rudder it does not show deflection on the instrument panel though does operate the rudder when viewed from astern in the "Spot Plane" view. The 182s is also very "touchy" on the runway when powering up. Auto Rudder function is on. I never experienced this when using the Precision Pro Joystick. TIA for any info.
Regards all,
Andy.

Greetings Andy:

What you need is a set of Pro Pedals for proportional control. The rocker switches (actually all of the buttons too) on the FSY are digital switches (like pressing keys on a keyboard). I can't imagine that anyone could use that for rudder control, but then again, some people can fly with a keyboard and mouse.

Hope this helps.

Hi again, Andy:

OK, I think I better make some clarifications here:

- What you're looking for in rudder control is proportional control (e.g. you move the controller X, the control surface moves X).

- It's possible to have proportional control with analogue and digital controllers. This is because the signals sent to your computer from the controllers can be analogue or digital.

- When I wrote that the buttons on the FSY are digital, I was referring to their properties (on/off only as opposed to proportional control), although the FSY sends these on/off commands via digital signals. (Thoroughly confused yet?) :)

The difference between analogue vs. digital as far as controllers are concerned is really not important (although digital/USB version of the FSY has more controls) as long as it's the same as the type of connector you have on your computer. What is important is proportional control for realistic flight experience.

The bottom line is the USB ProPedals Rudder Controllers we have in the pilot shop are fully proportional controllers that send digital signals. The best of both worlds IMHO.

Hope this clears things up.

Hi Andy,

Like Ben said, setting up the rudder is for an axis (analog vs digital). What you need to do is assign the rocker to the keys assigned to rudder. I'm not at my flying rig right now, so I don't know what they are by default (if any).

Go to controls|assignments, and find rudder. See what keys are assigned there. If there aren't any, go ahead and assign them, then program the yoke rocker for the same keys.

If the simulator is able to recognize the yoke's rocker switch without needing to use the yoke's software to assign a keystroke, andy woun't need to change configurations in the yoke software when he switches between aplications. Done that way the setup in the simulator will take care of which switches do what.

With auto coordination turned on will only affect ground steering. Activating the repeat function for the rocker switch would probably be in order.

Assigning controler buttons to FS functions doesn't seem to bother keyboard assignments for the same function. Having both allows the user a choice. A notable exception is controler axis; which will overide keyboard input if the controler is enabled.

Thx Ben, greenie, Robert, will take some time to digest all that info. Yep Ben .. totally confused :)
I grasped on Roberts advice that with Auto Rudder engaged it would only affect when on ground and taxiing. Exactly what I experience..In flight feels smoother and realistic than the the Sidewinder.
To add Num. Lock Off and press Numeral Pad 5 to check list, prior to power up.. a small price to play till I have mentally "fine tuned" myself with the rig.
Again Many thanks,
Andy
