Washington DC USA VIP Tour

This week we will simulate flying several officials on an air tour over the US capital to familiarize them with the city's geography. The 182 and 172 are a bit small so we will be flying one of the Caravans. The high wing will offer good visibility for their observations. (Note that the name of the Capitol Building is spelled with an o)

Note that much of the area inside the loop of this flight is a 24/7 prohibited area. Some legs of this flight will be only a few hundred yards outside this prohibited area. Flight Simulator licensing authorities will utilize their usual sanctions against simulated pilots violating prohibited or restricted airspace! ;-)

Route:

  1. Depart College Park Airport (KCGS). Establish 1000 feet at 100 kts
  2. SW to NE end of depiction of Anacostia River (should take about five minutes)
  3. Continue to John Philip Sousa Bridge (Next bridge past stadium)
  4. Turn right to a heading of 280° across Washington Channel and on to Potomac River. Note you will be in close proximity to prohibited area as you pass Supreme Court, Capitol and House Office Building areas. Again you will be in close proximity to the prohibited area from the Tidal Basin to the JFK Center. You will be flying in the direction of the South end of Arlington National Cemetery (Near the Pentagon). Arrangements have been made for Reagan Airport to space traffic to accommodate your flight.
  5. Turn right to follow the Potomac to just past the Watergate (upstream bed of Potomac River bends WNW and Rock Creek branches NNE towards National Zoo here in real world). The JFK center is the tiered rectangular building north of the Lincoln Memorial. The Watergate Hotel and office complex is just past the Kennedy center.
  6. Turn right to 45° for about 1/2 minute
  7. Turn right to 100° return to NE end of the Anacostia River depiction. You will be in close proximity to the prohibited area until past the Capitol. The circuit should take a little over five minutes.
  8. Reverse direction (to 280°) fly counter clockwise along same route, so passengers on left side of plane can get a good look.
  9. You may repeat the circuit in either direction until ready to return to the airport
  10. Return to land at College Park Airport (NE).

How is your passenger going to see the scenery with that low wing?
