Some pilots in the March 7 flight expressed interest in a Cessna C208 Caravan flight from a lake to an ILS landing on KSPB rwy 11.

How does a flight from a lake approximately 17.1 DME bearing 305 from Shafter (EHF) VOR, at the MARIC intersection, to KSBP via Avenal and Paso Robles VORs sound? Flight distance would be approximately 111 nm. Final Apprach Fix would be DOBRA intersection. I beleive the lake MAY be called Buena Vista.

Correction: 195 radial from Shafter VOR. 305 was the heading of the airplane when I read the tool tip pointing to the course change knob in the C208.

Encarta Interactive Atlas calls it "Buena Vista Lake Bed" but both the Atlas and the simulator show a lake that's about a mile wide and at least 2 1/2 miles long, with the long axis NW to SE. N35° 14.26' W119° 16.13 at 305 ft altitude should put you near the north end of it.

In case we need radio fixes to get our planes into the lake, there's plenty of room to fly a DME arc to the lake from the NW.

I have a couple of suggestions:

My thoughts are some of the guys are going to have problems re-positioning at the lake for the start since the location isn't listed as an airport/seaport in FS. Maybe we should start at KSBP and fly to the lake. (Of course cruise cruise altitude would need to be adjusted accordingly.)

I like the idea of using sea planes, but perhaps we need to start at established seaports to minimize startup delays. Just a couple of thoughts...

Maybe we could start a Bakersfield or one of the other nearby fields and fly a few short miles to the lake. The presence of an intersection over the lake makes it easy to make it a waypoint in the built in flight planner. The valley is fairly wide and if we don't get to carried away lowering the ceiling, the lake could be located without flying very high above ground level.

I will check the listing later, but I dont know what designated seaplane ports are in the Central California Coast area. I'm not sure the C208 could cover a flight from points as distant as the southern end of San Fransisco Bay or the Long Beach / Catalina areas in our time period.

An alternate could be:

San Luis Resevoir (0O0)- San Luis Co Regional(KSBP)

via: Panoche, Priest, and Paso Robles VORs

With landing on Rwy 11 (FAF int DOBRA)

Flight would be Approximately 119 nm long and take about 50 minutes.

Minimum Safe Altitudes as high as 5600 on first two legs.
Propose maintain 7500 from climbout to Paso Robles, remain above 3500 for first half of leg after Paso Robles to clear ridge betwen Paso Robles and Morrow Bay.

Note: Departure point code is "zero-Oscar-zero". It's a much larger lake than Buena Vista
