how do I get one of those other icons next to my name instead of a Key?

We'll post info about how to acquire icons shortly, but to give you a brief overview, there are monthly expenses involved with running the VPC, so in order to recognize those who support our cause by upgrading their membership status, they're awarded certain icons. (Of course with upgraded membership you get benefits like FlightAdventures email and access to subscriber only services, etc.)

Other icons are given to VPC crew in recognition for their contributions. Finally, pilots and instructors are given other icons to recognize their acheivements.

In the mean time, if you haven't seen it, we have some info on icons in the VPC FAQ. About VPC Icons

Gneral question...
How would one join the VPC staff as tech support or sysop?

I'll let Andy and Stephen answer this one (these are their areas), but as a general rule of thumb, members who participate on the message board by posting frequently, help others, help people in the lobby, etc., (the same will apply for the upcoming flight rooms) will have the best chance of being asked to join the VPC Staff. Of course, your nick does give you a bit of an edge!

The bottom line is we're looking for people who genuinely want to help build and nuture our little community.

What Ben says is very true... you have to show us that you are willing to help the FlightAdventures Community. I am currently working on a recruitment/training program which should role into place over the next month. At this time, we are very small and will only allow a small intake of sysops when necessary. As we grow, we will require more sysops/support staff. The last thing we want is more sysops than vistors

Andy pretty much summed up the situation. There is no recruitment right now for either sysops or support staff but in the near future we will have a training scheme and small numbers will be 'recruited' as either members of the community crew or tech support crew. Obviously they'll be more information available closer to the time
