After hitting the "Fly Now" button the "Launch Application" window appears. I fill in the path to the Fly! executable in the application box but get a "Launch Failed" message when I attempt to start the application.

Any clues?

Hi Andrew -

Ashamed to say I'm totally unfamiliar with Fly!2 - is it a 'registered' Direct Play application?

By that I mean, when you click FlyNow and the Launch window appears, is Fly!2 already listed? The box will show ONLY those applications which are 'registered' with DirectPlay. If it is not in the list, it is not compatible with DirectPlay and the launcher will not launch it.

Tssskk; disapproving sound :-). I love it mainly for the cockpits. I have to have switches that do something when you press them.

You're right. I had the same thought whilst driving to work this morning. Fly!2 is not a registered DirectPlay application and doesn't show in the list. This is hardly surprising as the installation I have is just a directory copy from my old Win98 installation. It's probable that it wasn't coded that way although I'm surprised. Why would a developer reinvent the wheel if the code hooks were already there for multiplayer?

Next time I run it I'll see what ports it's trying to open to the TRI server.

Ah, *if* Fly!2 is a DirectPlay application (DX 5 or higher), you'll need to install it on your system (as opposed to copying the directories) for the proper DX registry entries to be made (which the launcher looks for). You could copy the Win98 installation folders over again and be back where you were, but with a possible working multiplayer feature.

That won't really help much. The missing key to this puzzle are the DX registry entries since we use a DX launcher system. If there isn't any peer to peer connection feature in Fly!2, then we're at a dead end. Developing a Fly!2 server (non-DX to boot!) would be a huge undertaking.

Dead end I'm afraid, as there isn't a peer to peer function within Fly!, it all worked back to the server at TRI, over UDP port 7779. I shall ask some questions on the Avsim forum to see if we ever got a definative answer from TRI as to why this no longer works.
