"09-27-03 flight notes"

Greetings!

Just a couple of notes regarding the flight on Saturday:

1. Although ground and tower control can be handled by a single controller, you should only refer to each individually and not together as in "San Luis Tower Ground."

2. When requesting takeoff clearance, you should state your intentions (after you identify yourself, who you're calling, and where you are). Typical choices are limited to departing the area or remaining in the pattern. So your request should be either "San Luis Tower, Cessna 12345 at the runup area, right crosswind departure" OR "San Luis Tower, Cessna 12345 at the runup area, left closed traffic." Requesting "straight out departure, left closed traffic" is improper and confusing. While the intent might be to depart straight out and returning later for touch and goes, you should only request the departure first, then when you return to the airport, request touch and go's at that time.

3. Helicopter traffic is typically 500' AGL (700'MSL at San Luis).

4. If there's both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft in the pattern, pilots should be ready to switch traffic pattern direction at any time (left or right traffic) or make short approaches, and helicopter pilots should be prepared to land/stop and go/touch and go on the taxiway Alpha. Please remember that at PIC, you're not obligated to take the short approach or taxiway landing if you don't want to.

5. For those having trouble making base and final turns and lining up on the centerline here are some tips:

a. Single engine, fixed wing traffic pattern altitude at San Luis is 1,200'.
b. If you're flying a high performance single, slow down in the pattern. Pull the power back, drop your gear and add a notch of flaps if you need to.

Well, that's about it. See you on Saturday!

Ben
