"FS2002 Instrument Rating"

Posted by ph816 on 03-29-03 at 23:38z
Hi,
I am an ex-Naval Aviator and a commercial pilot for a local jet service. I have recently purchased the FS2002 and proceeded to do the check rides. When I got to the instrument rating I have found some errors. In the briefing it states that the first task is to do a VOR approach to runway 16R at Ksea. When you start the lesson it states a VOR approach to 34R/L at KSEA. I have tried the VOR approach plate B to runway 34R/L and it has some errors with the program. When you are at the FACTS Intersection @ 5,000' bearing 338 @ 6 miles, starting your published descent to MDA the lesson works and tells you to go around. Also you can fly @ 5,000' bearing 338 to the Seattle VOR and it will tell you the same thing. If you are at Seattle VOR then you are in between both runways. You are then told to climb to 2100' (you are already at 5000') Has anyone else experienced this?? Any feedback would be welcome. Thanks!

I'll try to fly the flight when I have a minute to verify, but what it sounds like is because you're "between both runways", the program is viewing that as being off course and is subsequently sending you on a missed approach. Were you getting a full CDI deflection?

While I'm no expert on FS's "adventure" system, from what I gather, there are certain blocks of space/parameters that trigger events. If you stray from those parameters, and the developer assigns a new event for that. So while you may have been at the right altitude, the course deviation (which I'm guessing is what happened) triggered the missed which I'm also guessing published missed calls for a climb to 2,100'.

Keep in mind that if you were on course and broke the programmed altitude parameter (being too high is a parameter parameter as well), it would return an altitude warning (albeit an incorrect one).

Either of these sound like the situation you're describing?

Hope this helps!

Ben

Hi, Thanks for the response. The actual lesson starts you out just south of the facts intersection and tells you to proceed to the 34 L/R approach to KSEA. Then you will be instructed to perform a missed approach as published. Then after reaching the PARKK NDB, you will be cleared to the SEA VOR to hold. When you click on the info for the flight, it states you will make the 16R approach. The examiner, once the check ride is started says to use the 34R approach. If I try the published approach on a 338 heading and descend at the proper rate approaching the MILLT (6.0 miles @ 3000') then at DONDO 1600' to the MDA, the checkride stops as a failure. If I just maintain a heading of 338 @ 4000' the checkride continues and instructs me to climb to 2000' to PARKK and turn left to 160, climb and maintain 3000' direct to the KSEA VOR and hold on the 140 degree. I have done this and have gotten this far, but was then left in a never ending holding pattern. I am beginning to believe I have a faulty program. The reason I say this is because I tried it again, did to loops around the pattern and was then directed to the NOLLA LOM, then the ILS approach to 13R @ KBFI via the procedure turn. I went through everything with a perfect landing and no certificate was awarded. I have completed all the other checkrides (Private, Commercial & ATP) and have passed them with no problem. Thanks again for the great site! I see myself spending a lot of fun time here.

I see there's a SEA ILS 16R approach. Perhaps someone was mixed up when they wrote the flight info.

I don't have the FS2K2 charts here, but according to the NOAA plates that I have now show MILLT as being 11nm from the MAP. Perhaps this is what the problems is?

There may be a trigger that switches a flag that you've descended far enough (remember there's an upper limit to the blocks for airspace). If the flag isn't set/triggered, the program just loops.

Hmm, try it again but using 11nm for MILLT and see what happens.

Thanks for the kind words. We look forward to seeing you around more often.

This is an excellent site for getting tips on how to pass the FS checkrides. http://members.chello.at/matthias.holzer/checkride.html
