The SR-71 Blackbird crossed the United States at a record speed of 2,124 MPH in 1990.

This model reached a speed of 2,019 MPH, or Mach 3.08. The fuselage and wing structure were built almost entirely from stainless steel and titanium.
The last flight of this model was made in February 1969 to the USAF Museum, where it is on Display.

I was going to say SR-71 (sure you were, Ben) , but I always thought that thing couldn't carry any ordnance. Anyway, erm... "The last flight of this model was made in February 1969" that should probably read 1999, correct?
Hey, just for everyone's information, Joe used to work on those beauties and has many stories about them. Ask him about them sometime and I'm sure he'll be happy to tell one or two to you.

Nope, 1969 is the correct date, no correction at all. There are 3 SR71's still flying today, but that was not the model in trivia
Hint: Colonel Joe Cotton described flying this model as "like driving a Greyhound bus around the racetrack at Indianapolis."
Hint: The folding wingtips were designed to use aerodynamic "shock wave" effects.

The XB-70 Valkyrie was designed to fly so fast, and so high that interception was impossible. There is a prototype XB-70 Valkyrie bomber on exhibit at the USAF Museum.
The development of surface - to - air missiles made the XB-70 obsolete.
