"Marking messages already read"

Posted by Detlef on 12-01-01 at 18:31z
Hi all,
it may be kind of a dumb question but I cannot find an icon or menu item to mark a message thread I have already read.

How can I do that? :Q:
Thanks for any help on this.

Hi Detlef,

To mark any messages you've read click the "Mark All" icon on the top of the screen (shown below):

Hope that helps

Hi Sam,

well now that you point me there I can see it. I was expecting to find a mark option after clicking show_all near a message thread header.

But I'll try this.

Thanks for the fast reply,
Detlef

The Mark option will mark all threads within the Forum. It's not available on a per thread basis. (I could explain why, but I'd probably bore you to tears!)

The other option is called "Mark All." This will mark all messages in all Forums as read. The former can be found in the Topic page, and the latter on the Forums page (which Sam's screen shot shows). I know it's probably really confusing right now, but if you click around a bit you'll understand its operation.

Please let us know if you have any other questions, and Welcome to the VPC!

Thanks for your explanations. What I would like to have is a slightly different behaviour when I click on (view all) when seeing the list of threads. It should open a new browser window rather than jump there.
(1) it is faster to return to the overview list then
(2) it is easier to see where I was when clicking (view all)

I know I can do it by using the right mouse button and then select from the menu popping up. But still, it would be easier.

This is not the most important thing to have, but would be nice for me. Just a suggestion.

From what I see until now, I like this place. Great work to set it up and make it work.

Regards,
Detlef

We can do that, but since many people have expressed their concern(?) :) about pop-up windows, I'd be reluctant to impliment this change without concensous from everyone. I might be possible to set this as a user option, which would handle the features on a case by case basis, that would take a great deal of work and quite frankly, we have more pressing needs right now. So unless we have the majority of members requesting this, we'll leave it until we clear out some of the prioriety items. Nevertheless, your suggestion has been noted.

Thank you! And we hope you continue to enjoy the VPC!

Ben,

one more. It would be helpful instead of just seeing the topics and the originator of a message thread, when looking at the overview of messages unread, that the whole message tree for the thread is displayed so that I can see all participants of the thread. I am asking because I tend not to read through all threads, but instead often look at the names. Again, just my thoughts. I am still learning my way arround here. So there may be an alternative method that works for me.

Doesn't the Expanded Thread list do that? Click on the View All button. Am I missing something?

you are right. Sorry I did not realize that, because I was looking at the unread messages only. As I said I am still finding my way arround.

Thanks
