"Ownership costs"
07-14-06, 00:10z

I'm a former fighter guy looking to get back into an airplane that can provide some thrills. I'm contemplating something like an Extra or Edge. What hidden or average costs should I expect in addition to purchase. I've never owned an airplane. Thanks

Hi there

First of all, I'd recommend an Extra. There are choices too, you can get a two seat certified airplane - either a 200 or a 300, or a single seat 300S.

Costs you need to think about are: maintenance (annuals and routine maintenance. The Extra is pretty low maintenance, but there is preventative maintenance on any airplane, esp. akro airplanes. Also, the harder you fly the more the maintenance). Insurance - depends on experience level & how much the hull value is and whether or not you'll be competing or flying shows etc.; Hangar rent; fuel; oil; parachute(s); headset(s). Those are the main things.

Hope this is helpful!
Patty

I'm looking for a 2 seater. For someone flying 25-40 hours per month, what would be an average hourly? I'd like to compete at some point but have a long road before that will happen. Can you recommend a school if I were to buy a pre-owned 300L? Thanks.....

Hi there

For average monthly costs, you'd have to add it up. It really depends on whether you buy the airplane with a loan or pay cash, how much you fly it, etc. There are too many variables to give you an estimate. Lots of good instructors out there, but again, would need to know more about where you're located etc.

Let us know if you get an airplane. You'll not regret it, I'm sure!

Patty
