"Best sources for Extra 260-300 Airframe Dimensions"
04-18-05, 10:18z

Being one of those "Modeler guys", and a Member of IMAC, I'm seeing a lot of 'versions' of this series of aircraft that are (to be kind) a bit less than close to scale outline. The Extras are the most popular Aircraft flown in Giant Scale Modelling competition, with the result that manufacturers are really pushing the limts well past the "10% rule" for scale. I was hoping to find some sources of 3-views and documentation for the proper dimensions of these planes, and wish to make an "Official Bible of Specs" for use by IMAC for all the planes flown in our competitions (everything from Caps, to Extras, One Designs, Velox's, Edges, Yaks, Su's, Etc Etc Etc). I've written to Extra Flugzeugbau twice, with no response, and the sources I find on the Internet really do not give me very accurate information, especially for such things as chord, length and moment ratios/sizes for the full-scale planes, as well as Fuselage cross-section and accurate layouts of the aircraft.

So, I'm tossing this ball into the ring to see if the "Full Scale" guys can come up with what I have not. Any information on these aircraft, or sourcs for this information, would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking, specifically, for info on the Extra 260, 300, and 300 Special/300R. The 300S and it's variants, as well as the 300L have been extensively documented, but the three I mentioned are a tougher nut to crack. When I get finished unravelling this mystery, I'll start on another aircraft, until I get them all documented. (obviously I have too much time on my hands)

Thanks in advance.

Kris

I know that there really isn't much information out there. Walter keeps his airfoil designs and other juicy details pretty private, and while I know quite a bit about the airplanes, I don't know all the details you might want to know.

If you're an at airshow sometime, feel free to come and measure my airplane. Maybe that would help you?

Best regards
Patty

HI PAtty, thanks for the response.

I already HAVE measured your plane. . at the Concord, NC Airshow some 4-5 years ago I took measurements of the tail surfaces, with the help of your wing-wiper/intern. You, Karen, Millie, and a couple of other people from your support group all signed both of the planes I had on hand for the RC Display at the airshow, an Extra 260 (38%) and a 300sx (35%)in your new color scheme and featuring the enlarged rudder that Walter started putting on the Extras. I remember making an idiot of myself after the airshow when you stopped by and we talked for a few minutes (talk about halo effect. . my brain was not engaged) Btw, the 300sx has flown exactly ONCE since you signed it. It was then taken apart and the radio gear and engine removed, and now sits in the corner of a room, patiently awaiting the day when I reinstall the components and then Donate it to Aero Sport for their lobby display. (You told me, at the time, it was the first model in that scheme you had seen. . kind of makes it special)

Anyway, getting back on track here. . . . .

I know the basic measurements for the the majority of 260 and 300 series derivatives . .I just need "official" documentation. Maybe next year, on my way down to Punta Gorda for the JR Challenge, I can stop in at Aero Sport and get some measurements off the Extras that are sure to be on hand. Mike Mancuso is going to be doing some full-scale presentation at the Joe Nall Giant Scale rally this week, in Greenville, SC., so I'll see about putting a tape on his plane (VERY carefully. . .)

Again, thanks for the response. I'll keep beating my head against this wall until something gives.

Not sure if he will be there this year; but last year at Oshkosh my son's had their Extra shirts on while we strolled through the Extra display. A nice German man came over and remarked he liked the shirts. Gee, its Walter Extra! Of course I dropped Patty's name; never hurts...

Got some very cool "blinking LED" Extra pins. Have one on the fridge which I turn on from time to time.

A very nice man.

Kris, I know this was an old search on your part. I am seriously looking for dimensions of the 260. For such a popular aircraft (model) there does not seem to be any reliable 3 views or dimensions. I have been able to collect a host of information on the 300 but none on the 260. If you did any measuring or reached any conclusions and are willing to share them please contact me at gdale@earthlink.net or 352 237 2908.

Gerry Dale, Ocala Florida.
