"Farnborough Airshow 04"

Hi Patty,
How are we? Just wanted to say it was a great pleasure to drive you around for the week at the Farnborough Airshow and never got to say goodbye.

As you know the Airshow here is every two years, And taking leave from my normal job to work at the show and drive all the pilots around the event is always great fun.
Will be there in 2006 although it may be the last one, Hope you are too.
Bill the Raytheon guy gave me a signed Airshow cap.. so thanks for that also.

Happy flying, Take care

Just curious why 2006 may be the last one? As I recall the Farnborough show has quite a history to it?

Yes you are correct, Farnborough has a great history behind it.. Way before I was born..

Having flown from the airfield as a Flight Observer with the Ministry of Defence from 1985 to 1994 the airfield now belongs to TAG who are a Civilian operator.

Since the MoD sold the airfield to TAG they had to make number of changes to comply with the Civil Aviation Authority which the MoD had got away with.

Now the surrounding area is being developed, More and more houses are being built, More companies are moving into the Farnborough area which means more people. This in turn has complications for planning & coordinating an airshow which also has rising costs with insurance premiums.

The airshow itself has rapidly reduced in numbers, Not so many aircraft on flying display or static. This I believe is due to other airshows Like Paris being every other year and up and coming shows like Dubai and one or two other trade shows I cant think of.

So there you have it.. There is talk of moving the show somewhere else within the UK but all this hopefully is sad rumours and speculation.

regards

Adam

Yes, development can kill an airshow. Here in the states where I live, when I was a child we used to have airshows featuring the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds. A number of years went by without a show and when they decided to start them again there 4 years ago, there had been a lot of development around the airport. They (homes)would be within the "box" needed by the jet teams, so only piston planes perform .
