"Acars problem"

Hi

I now have ADSL access to the net so have been visiting the website much more frequently. However, I still find the OLR best for catching up with new messages.

Two problems though:

1. I can't seem to get the Acars window to open. Before, it used to open automatically even though I rarely used it.

2. This may be associated - after running an OLR Get/Send pass, when it's finished it tells me that acars.exe is absent from my system. Where did it go and, more importantly, how do I re-install it?

Finally, a bit of admin, pse update my email addy to paulcroft@dsl.pipex.com.

I think most of the folks that use the OLR are on broadband. I find it's much more convenient.

Try visiting the message board through your browser and clicking the Check ACARS link (upper right side). If ACARS is missing from your system, it'll ask you to download and install it (if you've run VPC_cfg.exe) on this system. However, if you've updated your browser lately, you'll need to run VPC_cfg again (browser updates seem to change your security settings and overwrite ours).

If that works (download and install) and you still have trouble connecting to ACARS, check to see that your firewall has port 6667 open.

When I do that I see an outline of the acars window for about 1 second then it disappears.

I've run VPC_cfg.exe, acars.exe *is* missing from my system but I don't get any option to download and install.

Nope.

How please? I have a Netgear DG814 router which has NAT translation and, behind that, is ZoneAlarm. I've tried the above with ZoneAlarm turned off with no joy. I don't think it's a port problem on the router because I had this before I was ADSL enabled.

Happy New Year!

What OS and browser are you running? If using W98/XP/W2k and IE5/6 - check IE Internet Options - Click settings/view objects in the Temp internet files area - If you see ACARSX Control - installed - highlight and right right click - try update - if that doesn't fix the problem - go back and select remove. Then access the site and use Check ACARS link and see if it downloads.

If it doesn't, I'd look at any security settings that would prevent ActiveX from downloading.

OK, that resulted in what appeared to be a large download but, afterwards, no difference.

No sign of anything downloading this time but when I went back to Internet Options/settings/view objects the acarsX control was installed once more.

I've tried it with ZoneAlarm turned off and through the old dial-up connection with the router completely disconnected from the system. Can't think what other security settings could possibly be preventing it from showing now. See my reply to Ben in the thread below.

If you were on a dial-up before, and not accessing the dial-up connection from another computer that was linked to the router using ICS or some other connection sharing utility, you weren't going through your router when you were connected to the net.

I'm not familiar with the Netgear DC814. You'll have to check its docs to see if it 1) has a fire wall and 2) how to configure it.

Here are two things to try and help isolate the problem:

- Try connecting via your dial-up and see if ACARS runs.
- See if you can connect to any of the VPC chat rooms.

If the first works, then its a problem with your DSL connection settings. If the second works in DSL and dial-up, then you have a corrupted ACARS file.

No, no joy. I disconnected the PC from the network and plugged the modem line direct into the wall socket, completely isolating it from the router but this made no difference. I also made sure that ZoneAlarm was completely disabled by unchecking 'Load ZoneAlarm at Startup' then re-booting so that can't have been obstructing anything. I've run VPC_cfg.exe though I don't have the MS firewall running.

I can connect, at least I get the white screen I'd expect to type on but I can't actually type anything. Is this because the chat room is not actually 'open for business'?

If this is my problem should what I did following Vic's advice have cured this?

It's open and running 24/7. You might try using and IRC client such as MSChat and try connecting to chat.flightadventures.com. If you can't connect with that, then your port 6667 is being blocked some how.

I've discussed this with Vic and we think that we're down to two possibilities:

1. Port 6667 is being blocked. When that port is being blocked, the applications never connect, so they hang.

2. Some DirectX setting isn't right. If you can connect using an non-DirectX chat client (like MSChat), then #2 is most likely.

Just FYI, sometimes software firewalls really don't stop working even when you tell it not to load. I've used ZoneAlarm before and seem to recall that I had to set www.flightadventures.com to your trusted sites list on the Firewall tab.

Keep us posted. We'll get it solved.

Firstly, pse don't laugh. I've solved part of the problem, i.e. 'can I use the chat rooms normally?' The answer is yes. I have not used chat windows before and was trying to type in the big window, not the text entry window at the bottom <s>

However, I still can't get to see the acars window. I've unblocked port 6667 on the router (waiting for confirmation from an ADSL website to confirm I did the right thing but I think so). At the same time I reduced the ZoneAlarm security to lowest on both local and internet, such that it warned me I'd turned the firewall completely off but that didn't help either. This is beginning to get mildly frustrating.

Upon reading this, it occurred to me that there are two "chat" clients that we offer. If the one you used listed several buttons along the bottom of the application (the one launched by the Launch button), then that's the one we meant for you to try. The other chat application we offer is a Java application and while it does help us (it also uses port 6667, so it would eliminate that as a problem), unless you can tell us if the other application works or not (the one with the buttons) we won't be able to isolate where to start looking for the problem.

If you can connect to any chat using either application indicates that port 6667 is indeed open and usable. Please see above and let us know.

Yes, the chat window I was using has 5 buttons along the bottom, just beneath the narrow area where I type my messages, giving the voice frequencies for Unicom, Ground, Tower, Artcc and VoiceCom.

Of course, I can't confirm at this stage whether the messages I send are *actually* being sent. All I know, being new to this technology, is that the messages are appearing in the chat window.

If you can see your messages, they're being transmitted. So all is working fine. Port 6667 is up and running and ActiveX seems to be working (at least for the chat).

No Trace!!

It never occurred to me to search for the file before. What installs it and where do I get it from?

ACARS 2.0 and above no longer use a .exe file. It's all contained in an ActiveX component.

When you login the ACARS routine is called. It looks for ACARS on your system. If it doesn't find it, it'll automatically try and download and install it. The user needs to click yes to any messages that appear for it to install properly.

To see if you have the ACARS control file:

1. Right click on Internet Explorer
2. Select Properties from the right click menu
3. Click Settings... under the Temporary Internet Files section
4. Click View Objects... button
5. Look for ACARSX Control version 1,1,22,15

If you have the current version, there's something on your system blocking it from running. Do you wait a minute or so for ACARS to launch and connect? Sometimes due to lag time it can take a while.

Other than that, do you have Norton System Works installed? It's been known to muck with your windows system files and cause things to cease working.

That's not quite correct. ACARS.EXE is contained inside the ACARS install Activex control. It is automatically extracted when the control first executes. There should then be a program called ACARS.EXE in the system or system32 directory. If it's not there, you might check if you have the directory set to read only.

I can e-mail you a copy of the EXE file if you want, Paul but it's about 1M so I don't want to send it w/o your approval.

You mentioned a long download when you "removed" the control and accessed the site - that was the ACARS installer downloading however, either the ActiveX was blocked and it didn't execute or the System dirs are read only or otherwise protected against any exe being created.

Let me know if you want me to e-mail you a copy of the exe - include your e-mail address <g>.

I stand corrected.

You know, this reminds me, Paul, are you logged on as admin in XP? If not, that might explain why ACARS can't extract the file to your Windows system32 folder.

Not intentionally - or otherwise. I just turn the PC on and away I go. I'm the only user and, since first use, appear to have rights to do whatever I want. I never log on, it just starts :-)

No, properties shows it as not read-only and I've just successfully copied another *.exe file there just to test it. I assume that would be a good test?

Now I'm ADSL I don't have to worry about downloads of that size but thanks for checking first. Yes, pse email a copy of the exe file. I take it this is would be acars.exe and not just the ActiveX control?

I wonder what would be preventing that? My Norton AV is turned off (or at least the Auto-Protect' feature is turned off) and that's the only bit of software I have that I can think might try to protect the PC in this way.

Hi Paul -

Yes, it would just be the exe. You would copy it to the System32 directory.

It's hard to say what's causing the problem. With all the security settings and the AV and firewall programs, it's all too easy to have something like this happen. The fact that the ACARS ActiveX control downloads at all indicates that the *basic* ActiveX functions are working but either it is blocked from running the ax control OR it is blocked from creating the EXE in the System32 directory.

To which email address shall I send the ACARS.EXE file? Your AV may flag a warning about attached EXE's but, in this case only, ignore it. Any other time, be sure you know who is sending you an EXE file <g>.

I think it's the latter. Paul can get VPC Chat to load and run, so ActiveX is working and port 6667 is open. The only things I can think of if our information is correct is a hidden or read only folder or Norton playing tricks again (it loads a bunch of stuff even though you have it disabled). Just FYI, I run Norton AV 2002 8.07.17c with Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service disabled from services and in MSCONFIG, and navapw32 and cfgwiz disabled in Startup also in MSCONFIG.

Same version as me. Atm NAV is shown as 'manual' rather than disabled in services and current status is 'stopped'. Navapw32 is not disabled in startup and I don't have cfgwiz listed anywhere. If pasting acars.exe direct into ..\windows\system32 doesn't fix things I'll try changing my services and startups settings to match yours and see what happens then. Out of interest, with NAV set up as per your settings, does NAV automatically check incoming email for viruses?

The problem with the paste fix is we never really discover what's preventing the program from being writing to your folder. The down side is we ever update any of our applications, you'll never get the updates until we figure this out.

I can't argue with either of those problems. Atm, from my point of view, the paste fix is more to see if it would work anyway or whether there is something else deeper within which is causing this (which there obviously is).

Vic has now emailed me the file and I have pasted it into the system32 folder. Acars now starts OK when I go to the messages but, if I click in the white area and try and type, all I get is a 'bong' from the sound system. This is wrong isn't it?

Hi Paul -

In order to message someone, double click on their NAME in the lower panel - a second message window will open for you to "chat" privately. You type your message in the second window and read responses in main window.

I've got that and it's installed properly according to IE. I just thought to check for acars.exe because, when the OLR had finished downloading, this warning popped up saying the system couldn't find it.

I also run ZoneAlarm (free version) without any problem, there is NO need to reduce the security level.

Paul,

In response to Ben's query on Zone Alarm I have the following set in the firewall tab, this is using the free version on ZA.

FS PC 'Trusted' Zone (This is my second PC on my LAN)
Realtek adaptor 'Trusted' Zone (This is the LAN NIC on the 'server' PC)
ICS share adaptor is on the Internet Zone

I have trusted and Internet zones set to medium security. I think the trusted zone needs medium security for ACARS to work, but I may be wrong.

I am also not sure if removing ZA from the start-up section fully stops it working. There are two modules to ZA; ZA itself and a 'True Vector Service' which I think does the monitoring bit of za.

I would make sure neither of those are running.

You know, I think you're right. I was never able to get ZA to work with anything while using the High setting. I also needed to make sure that the Automatic Lock was disabled.

Then again, it's easy enough to uninstall and reinstall again. I think that's what I resorted to when troubleshooting another issue.

There's no need to uninstall Ben.

Use 'enditall' and you can close (or kill) almost any running program and, from memory, it will close both parts of ZA.

Once enditall closes any program though you have to reeboot the PC to get them back.

And as a 'cover all' I'm only talking about Win98SE, have no idea if enditall works on other OS's.

Yes, there is. I downloaded it shortly after starting with XP but I rarely use it. Now that I have 512MB of ram my PC never seems to slow down so it's not as important as before. However, it clearly still has its uses.
