"Flight Terminal Join problems"
10-09-02, 22:31z

Greetings James:

I'm replying to your message here.

> Understand this <s> but, tonight when I tried to log into Emiles flight
> EVERY box was BLACK except for the Top Left box!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just
> cannot understand why I can start a MP session with NO problem
> whatsoever YET, when I attempt to log on to a flight in progress ZILCH,
> can't get in?!?!

The process of creating a flight and joining a flight are very different, so just because you can do one does not necessarily mean you can do both. When you create a flight, no incoming information is sent to your system (IP address). However, when you join a flight, the IP address is sent to your system. If your firewall or what have you block that, well, then you never get that information.

The other possibility is Emile's connection may be via a proxy and not sending the right IP address. Has anyone been able to connect to a flight with Emile hosting? Or have you ever been able to join any flight from the Flight Terminal? (I know you can host them just fine.) If you can't join any flight ever, the problem is on your system or connection (firewall, proxy, configuration, etc.) There are several of us that fly in the Terminal regularly, so we know it works.

> In all honesty I can't see any difference in starting the flight from
> the Flight Terminal or from a multiplayer session. I either use my IP if
> I start the flight or use the session creators IP if I join the flight.

If you see no difference, then I guess we did our job properly! :)
The idea behind the Flight Terminal is to make it easier to connect to multiplayer flights. On most systems, all that's required is clicking a few buttons and you're connected. No looking up IP addresses, no typing, etc..

> I know the problem isn't my end as previously stated I had a) grabbed my

That's only partially relevant. MP flights require other ports than are used in email and the OLR.

> b)
> Started I.E. and logged into the site and then into the Flight Terminal

If you don't see any IP address in the launcher, there's your problem. Something is blocking the IP address being passed to the launcher. If the launcher doesn't have the IP address, it can't pass it to your system/Flight Simulator session.

> c) Started a MP
session along with 2 other programmes on networked pc's with no problem.

That's not totally either. If you're on a local network and net connections are treated as different animals firewalls etc..

> d) done another VPC pass and Newsgroup pass etc with no problem.

Again, not totally relevant. Port 80 is usually never blocked by firewalls or virus utils.

> The only thing I haven't tried (and am reluctant to while logged on) is

You could try it for a test. At least this way you can determine whether the problem is caused by them or not. Once you do, you can then configure your firewall and/or McAfee to open the ports you need. Mike, Vic, or one of the others on a broadband connection can help you with this.

Rgr. Thanks!
by firewalls etc..

Good morning James and Ben,
I suggest we plan a test session, I cannot this evening but I am available Friday starting at 18h00 local time (16h00 GMT) or Saturday in the morning (LT) or end of the afternoon (LT)
The idea is that I log in the flight terminal (I will not introduce an IP address), James joins the flight and we will see the result, afterwards we close and do the reverse : James logs in the flight terminal ,without IP address introduction, and I join and again we see the result. We can use the chat and RW.
Of course the problem can be at my side as I am behind an access service provider (via cable TV) and a firewall

To go more in details you can e-mail me at home at
emile.de.mesmaeker@chello.be
or at the office
emile.demesmaeker@atraxis.be
And afterwards whe will post the results in this forum

Hi Ben,

Just replied to Mike in FSFORUM (doh) but I'm having a few problems starting Launch now. As I told Mike, it's immaterial as to what firewall is up (if any) I still get one of two problems attempting to start the flight.

The fact that you're getting black boxes rather than the proper info in those boxes seems to indicate that the launcher is not getting the information, so it won't launch properly. Something on your system is blocking that information.

Again, this won't make any difference to you hosting a flight because we can grab your IP address despite any system issues you have and can pass that info to anyone that joins the flight. The problem is when you want to join an existing flight. If your system blocks that info from being sent to you, you'll never get the IP address, game name, type, etc. to connect to the existing session.

Why FS won't load on subsequent attempts to connect can be caused by many things (among them getting passed bad information for MP mode). Try rebooting your system and see if you still have a problem with FS loading the first time.

Mike and Vic should be able to help you out with the firewall problem (does your router or modem have a firewall function?). Just food for thought, I don't know that running multiple firewalls is really any safer than running one properly configured one.

HTH

Ben

Hi Ben,

Don't know what it will be on my system as I have the site in my trusted zone active?!?!

I'm not running multiple firewalls. I switched from None to Windows to McAfee with the same results?!

Hi James -

When you say "black boxes" do you mean the whole edit field is blacked out, filled with little black squares or one small black character sized square?

As far as ports are concerned, if you can fly regular MP from behind the firewall, you're ports should be ok. What *else* might be getting blocked is a different matter.

TTYL,

Vic
