normster Certificates/Ratings/Crew Stations: "Deletions?" 09-30-02, 16:05z  Ben, >> There's currently no way to delete downloaded messages through the OLR. << OK - so what does one do when the message file becomes very large and one's disk space is getting very short? Of course I could go into DOS and just DELETE the whole message file but that does not seem to be the "proper" way to handle the situation. What do the rest of the guys on here do about this little problem? I think I'm getting more and more confuzed here! Unfortunately I don't know squat about PERL and MYSQL. But I have been examining various files with my hex editor in an attempt to understand what the heck is going on! Hopefully someone may have some answers! Deleting the message file won't help much because once you login again, the OLR will download all of the messages again. BUT, if you set the min/date function, it won't download all of the messages before the set date---but IT WILL download an entire thread again if someone replies to a message/thread that you've already deleted. While it may solve your HD space issue, it won't be good for download times as you'll be downloading the same threads multiple times. > What do the rest of the guys on here do about this little problem? We're looking into it, but for the reasons listed above, it's not going to happen until we move to the next generation of VPCOLR, which is a pure databased version of the message board. FWIW, what's going on is we have three components working here; Perl with OLR.pl, MySQL, and VPCOLR. - OLR.pl connects to the message board, retrieves messages by stripping off the HTML code and then passes the results to MySQL. - VPCOLR is a GUI that controls OLR.pl and MySQL. MySQL is just a database that stores the messages. Perl is an external compiler of sorts/command interpreter. > Hopefully someone may have some answers! Now adjust your date (from where ever it's done ) and then do another pass. It should then only pick up posts from the date you set. Actually, I brought it up when we were Beta testing the first version of the OLR long before release, and it was pointed out to me that even at that time the entire message base consumed far less than 1 Mb and not to worry about filling up my hard drive 'cause it would take years to generate that many messages. FWIW, mine is only 4.5 <g> - I understand your concerns. Let me get my head together with Guido and see if we can come up with a workable solution. There are several issues that need to be dealt with - mainly dealing with the way the DCBoard software keeps track of messages. I'm guessing we could implement some sort of Archive/Purge *complete* threads function. Individual message deletion would not be allowed as this could really mess up the thread system. Also, be prepared - if you delete a complete thread and somewhere down the road someone adds a message to it, you will automatically download the *entire* thread again. Anyhow, let me get together with Guido and see what we can do. Regardless, is that a 20gig drive or a 20 meg drive? I assume the former or you wouldn't have room for Windows OS and the OLR already. Please remember that 20gigs is 20,000 Mb (1 gig is 1,000 Mb). 6.63megs is a virtual drop in bucket by comparison.
