"Problems with LOGIN"
09-26-02, 10:07z

All of a sudden, like just these last couple of days, I'm having desperate problems with VPC OLR log-in. It reaches the stage where is says "sending login information" or similar, then just sits there, for several minutes. Then, about once in every 6 tries it gets it done and things go normally. The other 5 times out of 6 it comes back with "LOGIN FAILED".

It is very frustrating. I'm sure I've not changed anything this end. Is this a server problem, or what? Any help gratefully anticipated, please.

Regards,

Pete

Greetings Guys:

(Please post threads that involve VPC issues in the VPC Tech Forum. Thanks!)

Back to the login problem. Perhaps I can explain this better.

If you ever have a login problem, we need your help to try and track down what/where is causing it. In order for us to determine whether it's a server problem or ISP/connection problem, we need you to run a trace route when you're having problems logging in.

With that said, I believe that since both of you are having problems with the login, and we aren't on this side of the pond, that there's some issue with the connection somewhere between you and the server (in SFO).

Just FYI:

1. We have not changed anything on the server that would affect the login.
2. Granicus does have some issues with their upstream provider. They've beeen "working" on the problem late at night PT, so perhaps you guys that login during those hours are just running into problems when they're working (which would explain why we don't see them here as we're asleep during those hours).

To use tracert (please do this when you're having a login problem):

1. Go to Start: Run
2. Type in: tracert www.flightadventures.com

What will happen is the application will trace the hops from your computers to the VPC. It will indicate whether a connection can be made to the server, any abnormally long hops or if there's a problem/break, where that break is.

Thanks!

Ben

Oops, seems like I instructed everyone to use Run instead of Command Prompt. If you run tracert through the command prompt, you'll be able to review what's going on.

My apologies.

If you're so inclined, I'd highly recommend downloading the free version of PingPlotter from www.pingplotter.com. It has a lot more features, runs much faster, and is easier to understand.

Gotcha.

Hmmm. It'd take a lot to get me to understand anything at all about the Internet, but I'll take a look. Thanks!

Hi Ben,

Oh, sorry. Didn't realise. But now how do I reply to this thread message in the other forum? Shouldn't you move the thread for us first?

For us to run a trace you will need to explain what it is and how to do it. I'm afraid we are not all Internet experts. In fact I'm an out-and-out Internet Dunce, I assure you! <G>

Ah -- my main times of trying to get in are 0900-1100Z and 1500-1800Z, also just before retiring , 0000-0200Z. Almost all of these would be non-office hours PT, though by no means all "late at night".

Ah, right. Wilco.

Does this give us a file to send to you? Where does it put it? Or is it a DOS program displaying on screen? In the latter case will it go to a file if I add ">trace.txt" on the end of the command line?

Regards,

Pete

No problem, Pete. Thread has been moved.

From the tracert you sent it looks like the line is clear, so we can rule that out. We'll find the answer.

Thanks for your continued patience.
