"Problem with AOL Software"
12-29-01, 19:45z

Hi Ben,
I access VPC via AOL 7.0 software. I'm having problems after exiting from VPC - when I try to sign off from AOL the AOL software ALWAYS locks up, and requires a CTRL-ALT-DELETE to bring up the task list to manually end the AOL task. This doesn't happen with other online sessions, but I can guarantee that if I access VPC anytime during a session then the lockup on sign off will occur. Any ideas what might be causing this?
Regards....John

Greetings John:

This is the first time that we've heard of any such problem. Perhaps you can isolate which page causes the problem (eg. try the main door page, then exit. If all is fine, move to the next page--the main VPC page, then exit, and so on.). We're running some Java applets and storing a cookie (user option) for some features, but nothing really out of the unusual when you get down to it.

Do you have any problem when you access via IE? I do know there are some Netscape compatability issues now (which we'll try to sort out once we get all of the kinks out of this IE version. Hmm, actually now that I think about it, doesn't AOL use Netscape?

Ben

As suggested I tried from different points within VPC. Basically, signing off from AOL with the Main Door page showing is OK. Anything else is not and causes AOL to lock up. If I navigate into the site and then back all the way out to the Main Door again before signing off from AOL then it works fine, so I guess this is the workaround.

I've only recently started using AOL 7.0 and it seems to have completely taken command of the comms on my machine. Whatever I try to do with other comms programs AOL seems to override them and load itself to establish the comms. This is a pain, and I haven't had time to sort it out yet. So, no sorry, can't tell you what happens with IE5 at this point. Will let you know when I get it sorted. And I believe you're right about AOL and Netscape - AOL took over Netscape didn't they?

Regards....John

Hi Ben,
I've now managed to get IE5 going without AOL interfering and everything seems to work OK from there. I've also tried piggybacking IE5 on top of AOL and again everything seems to work OK - no AOL lockup on sign off. It seems the problem only exists when accessing VPC using the native AOL software (which means Netscape?). So - I know what to do now, don't I? <G>

Yep, I think you're right that AOL acquired Netscape a few years ago, so I'd imagine that they did so to use their browser. One of these days we'll delve into Netscape's inconsistencies so it'll work with the VPC, but until then, I'd venture to guess that AOL's latest and greatest is causing the problem because other people have no problem with earlier AOL software here at the VPC.

>So - I know what to do now, don't I? <G>

Yep! :)

Happy New Year!
Ben
