Statue hunting on Easter Island.

Departure/Destination airport information:
SCIP Mataveri Intl. 27° 9.88' S 109° 25.30' W @ 227 ft
rwy. 10/28 10,841 ft. 10(IIPA) ILS 110.30

Easter Island, also known as Isla De Pascua, is known for a large quantity of large stone statues carved over a 900 year period by the island's natives. The statue carving is believed to have only stopped when the natives exhausted the nutrients in the islands soil and suffered serious famine, civil war and no materials to build canoes.

We are going to look for the statues. The appearance of the scenery is closer to real life if Autogen Scenery is temporarily turned off. The statues appear when Detail Scenery is set for normal or better. Select a slow aircraft and FLY LOW.

FS 9.1 Easter Island statue locations
Some of statues are not upright. Some of the upright statues are partially buried.

Readings obtained with default Garmin GPSMAP 295 while on ground within a few dozen yards of a statue. The "To" column shows direction from the landing point to the VOR.

FYI:

This is a VERY ISOLATED place. The GPS doesn't even show a second nearest airport! The nearest airport, VOR and NDB modes only show facilities on the island.

Considering lack of development on the island and length of runway I'm thinking Mataveri Intl. may have been built as an emergency strip for transports traveling between Santiago and Tahiti.
