Best wishes to yourself and everyone else here as well.

Work rather got in the way of simming last year, hence my New Year resolution; MORE FLYING! Kicked off early with a couple of UK Vatsim flights last night in my favourite airplane, the Socata TBM-700. Hadn't forgotton too much; once I got it started that is. You really need fuel boost on before that big fan thing on the front will get going. :o

Which Socata TBM-700 are you flying? Is it freeware? If it is, perhaps we should include that in our VPC Planes package?

Happy New Year!

It is freeware, but for Fly!2. It's well worth a look though, for a freebee it's a work of art.

I wasn't aware that you were flying Fly!2. I don't seem to recall how multiplayer worked with that. Is it a DirectX sim?

It is DirectX but the multiplayer stuff was all hard coded to a TRI server that hasn't worked in a long time. Vatsim is fine although all other aircraft appear as Cessna 172s. This was done as there were some stability and performance issues with other aircraft models.

How are you all connecting to Vatsim? DirectX?

Has anyone tried Fly!2 in the Flight Terminal? I wonder if it'll work in the older DirectX flight rooms.

Squawkbox uses it's own proprietary protocol to pass aircraft position information. I think I did try one of the flight rooms a while back but couldn't get it to work. I can't remember what the problem was though so I'll give it another try.

Hi Ben,

>Hope everybody is having a warm, happy Christmas with your

Thanks we are, although Christmas Day here was pouring rain!

One of my new toys this Christmas was a Supermarine
Spitfire multimedia CD from Tamiya. Full of pictures,
videos, and other technical details. :-)

Also bought a sound card and speakers for my wife's
computer. Installed the Creative SB 16 card on my system,
and gave her back the SB Live card that I borrowed a while
back for my new computer. With the simpler sound card
installed, my MS Sidewinder 3D Pro Joystick is finally
working all the time. It was intermittent, working about
35% of the time on bootup with the SB Live card.

Best wishes for the rest of the Holiday Season and a
Happy New Year!

I know Tamiya from my R/C days. Didn't know they did multimedia stuff. However, knowing their reputation for quality models etc., I'm sure what you got is top notch.

are you sure that this is a bi-directional soundcard which
supports use by simultaneous running programs? If not, you
will get into trouble if you want to use something like
Roger Wilco or Radar Contact.

Thanks for the tip. I'm pretty sure this SB 16 card will work Ok
but I will re-load Roger Wilco this weekend and make sure
it works Ok.

I sure am enjoying the Joystick working 100% of the time. :-)

I think although we have relatively warm winters here (Christmas with no snow), I think experiencing the holidays in your part of the world where it is summer would be quite an interesting change. One of these days you might find me at your doorstep this time of year! :)

Hi Ben & all,

thanks for that, and best wishes for a new year in good
health condition.

As I am still running my old 450 Mhz Pentium II system, it
didn't make any sense for me to invest into FS2004 and of
course, any new toys for it. As far as I know, the FS2002
multiplayer mode is no longer compatible with FS2004 so I
fear I will not be able to attend multiplayer flights as all
of you have surely upgraded, didn't you?

If my system doesn't die prematurely I will most likely wait
till FS2006 before investing into a new one - wait, maybe I
go for a new notebook. Has anyone good experience with
running FS2004 on a notebook?

Guido

Ciao Guido -

Happy Holidays!

Good news - our flight rooms are set up so that fs2002 and fs2004 players can fly together. Check one of the prior announcements for the details.

:D
Multiplayer Flight Room 1 is set up as a server that can accomidate FS 2002 AND FS 2004 players IN THE SAME SESSION! It uses a third party server application, I think it's "FS Host", that Ben would be better able to tell you about. TB, my "neighbor" in the Charlote North Carolina USA area, has been acompanying us with his FS 2002 almost every Saturday for over a month. Contact us on Roger Wilco some Saturday and we'll get you into the flight!

I was running FS 2004 for a while on a 450 MHz Pentium III with 381 MB main RAM and ATI Rage Fury video Card (32 MB). It ran acceptably with fairly high settings in most areas, but did stutter badly at low altitudes near large airports. As ussual, lower settings would probably help the frame rates at the sacrifice of appearance. The new GPS displays seem to affect frame rates quite a bit when they are open too. On the 450 MHZ machine I definately get better frame rates at KSBP in FS 2004 with default scenery than above the same field with CCCoast scenery (looks GREAT but needs more than 450 MHz when landing a jet or faster prop) in FS 2002.

I wonder if more RAM would help in this situation. My guess is the textures are causing the greatest impact. What kind of RAM do you use. We may have some from one of our old servers that may work.

well, so it at least needs a special server to get FS2002
and FS2004 together in a session, this is what I was
expecting. As you may remember all attempts from my side to
join such a session in earlier flight rallies have failed; I
got in and was thrown out almost immediately.

IIRC Ben said, it might be because of my old Direct-X
software, which I am not going to replace because there are
no longer any current drivers for my graphic card regarding
new Direct-X versions.

Thanks also for the FS2004 on 450 Mhz details; I think the
only advantages of FS2004 are better ATC and graphics, the
latter of I cannot use due to the slow processor. For ATC I
have already RadarContact V3 which is IMHO better than any
inbuilt stuff.

Guido

As the others have stated, we're fully FS2002 and FS2004 compatible in Flight Rooms 1 & 4 respectively.

I'm running FS2004 on a 1.7 gHz Toshiba notebook and while I can't crank FS all the way up, it runs fine with slightly higher than the FS2k4 default settings. With the power and prices of notebooks today, for me it was a no-brainer to move away from a desktop machine altogether. What I do is connect a wireless mouse and keyboard into my notebook, and plug in to my desktop monitor and aside from the virtually silent operation, you'd never know you're on a laptop. With this type of setup, I get the best of both worlds for what a desktop machine used to cost.

The only suggestions I have is you need to make sure you get a laptop with a good 3D card and at least 512megs of RAM and you should be fine.

would you mind telling me your model so that I can have a
look at the specs?

I am typing this message on a Toshiba notebook as well, at
the moment ;-) however it's rather old (built in 1999).

If you use your inbuilt display with the notebook, will it
work? Is there a significant drop in performance? Does the
screen flicker or is it fast enough?

Guido

I have a Toshiba 5105. They have newer models out there now, but as you say, it'll give you the specs for comparison.

Yes, I use the built in screen and it works fine. It's a TFT and there's no artifacting or flicker with FS or any of the driving sims I've played.

Hope this helps!
